Pure Nor Cal Old School Goodness! 70's Panda MX 3 Score
For most of us old school bmx collectors that grew up and raced in Northern California owning a early Panda (made in Concord, CA) and a early Patterson (made in Hayward, CA) is something really special. As of today I finally have both ![]()
I'm sure some of your local boys saw this posted on the Sac CL for $150 over the weekend. Well a good friend of mine picked it up yesterday for $175. Although he was the first caller at 4am Sat. morning the guy was bombarded w/ calls w/ offers over his asking price. Luckily, the seller honored my friend being the first caller and sold it to him. Not quite sure of the year but I assume w/ no rear brake bridge, it's a 76-78 MX 3. Everything is OG. Even still has the original "stupid rare" Panda MX tires. I've been looking for quite some time for a early Panda. These early 20" Panda's are so comfortable to ride. The frame has a TT length of 21" and where the seat post sits now, I have 26" of room up front
So, even at 6'2 it's a super comfy ride. Some of the parts on the bike are YSI front rim, Schurmann ( made in W. Germany) rear rim, Hunt Wilde grips, early Redline undrilled forks, Takahashi Japan Panmax seat, Shimano coater brake rear hub, most likely 1st gen Takagi MX crank and a unstamped Ashtabula stem. Not sure about the black vinyl pad set, seat post, front hub, bars and chainwheel. All decals and finish is OG. Besides all the OG frame and fork decals it also still has the 10 10 High Carbon Tubes , CA bike license and the Napa, CA bike store where the bike was sold decals. Unfortunately, the MX 3 decal on the TT is barely visible. Besides the wear on the finish everything is free of any damage. Definitely, already one of my favorite bikes in my collection. Most of my old 20' bikes are to small for me to ride so, this Panda is gonna get a lot of riding time in the future. So fricken stoked to have this bike! Enjoy the pics.
If anyone can give some some assistance in figuring out the year of mfg. or info. on any of the unknown parts, I'd truly appreciate it. Serial # is M- 1594

Kurt, that is freaking awesome!!! I would agree with 76-78. Check out this link http://bmxsociety.com/topic/19402-all-things-panda/ . It might help identify. Cool score and nice pic with the wifey. I'm trying to con mine into. Photo shoot as well. Keep me posted on what you find out.

Thanks for the info. David & Kris. I'll take a look at the Society thread right now. I'll post any new info. I come up w/.. I never knew Panda made a MX 3 until I saw this one. I always thought they only made the MX 1 & MX 2. If anyone knows what's the difference between the three MX series models, post up the info..
Thanks for all the nice comments guys. ![]()
