These any good for dirt jumping?

Planning out my Californian build, decided I'd rather go with spoked wheels. It's going to be a dirty jumper, and I'm looking for wheels that will hold up to big air without bending after the first outing.

These are apparently double walled, just wondering if anyone knows if they're alright. I'm going with Tioga Comp III's, so I'm not looking for crap, but I am looking to keep it to a budget. I'd rather not spend more than $150 on a wheelset.

I am, of course, also open to suggestions. My heart isn't set on these, and the rims don't have to be black. I'd honestly rather have chrome or white. roll

Re: These any good for dirt jumping?

You wont find any QUALITY wheelsets in chrome or white. Sun is badass and their hubs last forever. Awesome wheelset for any non era correct thrasher.
DT SPOKES!!!
RYNO LITES!!!
36!!!!

And get some high psi tires. You'll thank me later there are tons of awesome NS tires that resemble older tires.
Any odyssey are nice. Primo if you dot mind the weight.  But really. Try to have tires with more than 80 psi

DJ wheels on a budget? too funny.  Champagne dreams on a beer budget = lip stand. lol

Save your cash till you can afford a wheel set (safe enough) to handle that type of shred.

Re: These any good for dirt jumping?

Haha. $140 versus $160 is in my opinion a negligible amount. So I don't think the champagne analogy really works here. I'm not looking to cheap out, but I'm not made of money, either. If $160 for a pair of strong dirt jump wheels is a good buy, then that's what I'll go with.

I know you get what you pay for, and that's why I posted that set. I'm only recently getting back into BMX after a decade or so hiatus, and I'm unfamiliar with the going rates of quality stuff, as well as what brands have popped up in the past ten years that make said quality stuff.

Two thumbs up for the Sun SS's is good enough for me. That's right around what I was hoping to spend. Anyone have a suggestion on retro-ey tires to mate up to them? I was gonna go with these.

Oh, and the bike is going to be an '83-'88 Mongoose Californian.

If you're doing things where you'd be concerned about bending wheels....you may want to rethink the whole 30yo frame idea.

I would seriously look at these, budget or no budget http://www.planetbmx.com/shop/spoked-wh … _1169.html

I think Ed has a green set as well.

I don't understand where you're coming from. I asked if a $140 pair of wheels was any good. I was then pointed at a set of wheels that are slightly more expensive and then told they were of better quality. A statement you then +2'd to. I said that seemed like a good idea and agreed to buy them.

You pointed me at a better product, I agreed to give it a shot, and you call me cheap? The whole point of this thread was to see if I could buy durable wheels without breaking my bank. If it's not possible, tell me it's not possible. Don't talk in circles and then berate me.

Psycho, I'm not planning anything like the crazy stuff people do on modern bikes. But even so, if you think an older frame won't hold up to the abuse, then I'll have to reconsider my plans for the build. I'd love your input, as I'm not too well versed at how well an old bike handles the kind of punishment it would have seen when it was new.

I dunno if you guys misread my tone or what. I didn't mean to come off as rude or disrespectful. I'm just trying to build the race bike I had back when I was a teenager. I apologize if I came across as such, and again I don't know what I should expect to pay for parts. I asked if $150ish was a decent area, because I didn't want people to think I was looking for a "spare no expense" top of the line, absolute best-quality wheel that all the pros use on unlimited budgets. If I can't conceivably buy good wheels for that much, then I'll have to rethink my budget.

Re: These any good for dirt jumping?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ8JVc-l … re=related

That's what I'm trying to do. On a classic BMX bike. I'm not trying to be Ryan Nyquist on an old Mongoose. I'm not trying to be a pro racer. I just want to ride a classic Mongoose around a dirt track and have a good time, like I used to back when I was a kid.

I used to bend rims doing it, and I was looking for a better wheel without going broke. I am well aware that the bike is going to cost money. And I am aware that the bike is old. I've ridden lots of old bikes, some of them very very hard. At most I broke a pedal off or snapped a chain. And I'm talking old department store Huffys, not loop-tailed 4130 race bikes.

I used cheap rims on my old Californian because they were what I could afford with a McDonald's job. They bent all the time. I don't know how often a decent race bike wheel bends, because I've never owned one. I assumed they must pretty often, and I can't afford to be buying a new $200 wheelset every time I bend one. Hence this thread.

Metal degrades with age. I get that. If the welds break and I die or become horribly paralyzed, that's my problem. Sorry I asked. I'll build the bike with or without approval, I'm just trying to get some help finding the right parts. You guys have been around the sport a lot longer than I have, and I'm asking for help trying to build a better version of the bike I had as a kid. If you think it's wrong of me to want to rebuild my old bike and enjoy it like I used to, then you aren't obligated to help me, but I'd apperciate it if you would. I don't have a lot of aspirations in this world, but I'd like to think getting my old bike back is a pretty small but achievable dream.

You show me where I was being out of line and I'll take it back.

Re: These any good for dirt jumping?

Buy the wheels I showed you. In your budget and perfect for what you want to do. You would t be able to run the back wheel on any new school freestyle bikes now because of the gearing size. But if you stick with race frames I imagine they will last you a very long time. Just keep high psi in the tires and don't smash into the corner of curbs.

Here is a GREAT tire for the purposes your looking for. High psi last along time and great grip. Get a knobby for the front and a 1.95 for the rear. It might be close because of the clearance with OS frames

Re: These any good for dirt jumping?

Thanks, guys. I was going through some crap last night and I let it follow me to the forum. Shouldn't have gotten so stupidly emotional.

Roy, I'll do that. Cool that those tires come with the tan sidewalls. I really appreciate the help so far.

Cat-walk, thanks for being more civil than I was. I now see where you were going with your post. Sorry about that. You're right, as my confidence grows my bike should be prepared to handle the punishment. The more and more comfortable I get, the higher I'll want to go, and the harder the landings. That said, I DO want to own a few bikes, one of them being a nice new Sunday or SE or S&M. I figured I would leave the daredevil jumps and stunts to that bike.

Thank you for the input, guys, and I hope I haven't put you off of me. Love it here, I wouldn't want to wear out my welcome.

Re: These any good for dirt jumping?

Buy once, cry once. And yes, you seem to be rather confrontational and I've only been here for a week or so. lol. With that said, I'd save my duckies until I got what I wanted. I'm sure the money is burning a hole in your pocket, but I'd wait.

Whenever I got back into BMX (like a month ago), I had to decide if I wanted to get a Hutch or something OS like I used to have. However, since bicycle technology is leaps and bounds ahead, I went NS and never looked back. It's like using a 68 Camaro to street race when a Subaru BR-Z would be better suited. *shrug* Of course my opinion is worth as much as you paid for it. =P

Re: These any good for dirt jumping?

Haha, what money? I'm just building the bike in my head right now. lol

Yeah, I know what you mean about the practicality. It comes down to preference, though, I think. I could get a new bike, yeah, but that's not where my heart is. I'm interested in NS bikes, but what I really want, deep down, more than anything, is my old bike back.

Heh, I'll work on my attitude. I can blame it on stress but truth be told I've always kinda been like this to a degree. It's no good for anyone.

And Roy, would you say a 1.90 rear is okay? I don't seem to be able to get those tires in a 1.95.

Yea 1.9.

Look into getting something bigger than that little mongoose. Havin the bike you had as a kid and a bike you can enjoy riding are 2 different things. Unless your still the same height.

Always great deals on here or can be found.

If you need any help with anything. Dont be afraid to PM.
I frequent this site less, so it might not be that day. And dont worry. It's not just you. While drawn out explanations are well played. Context and emotion gets all warped. There is ALOT or garbage on here. Just tell Em to frank off.

Haha. Yeah, I hit my growth spurt at like 13. I've been 6'1" the whole time. I've ridden 24s and they're cool for cruising, but I feel right at home on my little 20s. cool

And yeah, the language filters here are great. I'd love to hear the story behind the one for shit. lol

Yea. Look for something with a 21" 21.25 top tube. get a yob and you can pick up a nice long Sunday frame on their website for cheap. 6 1 is way too big for a frame that probably measures 18.5"
