Re: Is it ok to buy a frame with serial number scraped off?

As I said elsewhere, our local PD sells off unclaimed bikes once a year. If there was a bike I wanted and the serial was scratched off, I'd still buy it.

Buying a 2011 Sunday at the local swap meet for $20 and it's got no serial? Not worth the headaches it comes with.

Do I owe you feedback? Please remind me via PM and I'll take care of it.

I agree- I've seen some frames I'd really like- but filed off serial.
It's a no go at that point. Really don't want bad juju , ya know?
Maybe the gut hit a lot of "high curbs"and accidentally ground it up... But - I'm out of sale at that point!
Feels like you are inheriting some kids pain and tears....sad

buy it

i have an 88 sport that was ground off.  have always considered sending it to chip, have him powder it and add 122588 as the serial number.  a Christmas and birthday gift to myself smile

Hell no. That is receiving stole property. As a rule, ask yourself if your ethics will allow you to take or buy what was stolen from someone else. I cannot think of one other reason a serial would be ground off. Other than someone stole it and tried to hide that fact!

This is where I'm at on this, too.

If you've had a bike stolen from you, you might feel the same way. hmm

Re: Is it ok to buy a frame with serial number scraped off?

I don't touch them either.  I passed on a Redline RL 20 II that was in great shape with the exception of the ground off serial. Another guy showed up behind me and bought it no issue for him. Like others have said if its ground off it was stolen at one time and I don't want any of that...

Have tons of punk/HC vinyl and will trade for bike stuff .. send me a PM!

Re: Is it ok to buy a frame with serial number scraped off?

To me if its scraped off it was probably stolen at some point... 20 something years ago if its an old school bike. My thoughts are the bike has changed hands many times since then and the bad juju is gone by now. smile

My first bmx bike was a Huffy Pro Thunder.... I was a fan ever since.
