HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

Hi, I made this thread to stress how much it hurts to see survivor bikes get parted and/or refinished. This is a topic that is always highly debated and i may be opening a can of worms but i love worms. When i first started collecting bikes i used to take the decals off and replace them with new ones.. Now i cant even take the bike seriously if the decals arent beat and old looking. If the bike is super beat a refinish might be justified but i would probably sell after that. I understand why riders would like powder because its durable and cheap but as far as im concerned i would never powder anything im thinkin bout keeping. OLD BIKES WITH OLD DECALS HAVE OLD STORIES AND AN OLD SOUL!! SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!!! yikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikesyikes!

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST YOUR SURVIVORS!!!

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

When I first started I was in the refinishing mindset but as I got more involved and matured I began to appreciate the value & beauty of survivor condition. I'm not against taking things apart, cleaning & shinning them to make them as nice as possible, my National Pro & Thruster are examples of just really clean used builds and I love them both. I haven't had the good fortune to come across many complete survivors but I don't like when people leave bikes "Barn Fresh" there's nothing wrong with removing vintage dirt & grease.

Looking for some reasonably priced Revcore parts for a Hutchins build.

I agree 100%. Nothing wrong with cleaning and making it run smooth. Ive parted bikes in the past aswell but if they were not all dinged up i wouldnt have. I almost feel like my survivor bikes are haunted. A good haunted though. wink

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

I have a survivor 87 purple Performer.. its in great shape so I cleaned it up and left it alone. Im not against restoring however if the bike is just trashed. smile To each his own, I know when I have redone a bike, it was because I wanted to own the bike that I saw as it was in the bike shop when it was new but I could never buy it.

My first bmx bike was a Huffy Pro Thunder.... I was a fan ever since.

Please no drama!! Im just voicing my opinion on how i feel about survivors. I have many friends with refinished bikes and they look dope. All im saying is i like when people restore them right. When my friend hit me up and said he repowdered an 84 gt thats OG chrome wasnt bad and no dings, i was like UH OH! He said he got it done by chip and when i saw it i was surprised how thin and not chubby the powder looked. If i ever got something powdered it would be by that dude period.

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

I am not a big fan of re-finished bikes.  But I have no Problem with people parting out a survivor. the parts will go to build another bike. Unless it is a special bike  like woodies Gold Trick Star or something.   if it is a big deal that survivors get parted just buy all the parts LOL .  problem solved.

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

Atually I think it's a good topic. Probably been covered a dozen or so times....but I like it. All my bikes are rider/survivor/good to great condition. But the thing I always do is replace decals. I clean, polish and shine as much of the bike as I can and then replace the decals...unless they are in good condition. I'm not into building NOS or dead mint....or minty for the glee club lol  but I do like the bike to look as nice as it possibly can. As far as paint/powder....all my bikes are chrome but one and that is paint. My .02

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

So let me ask you guys this.

Would you rather buy a survivor condition bike, or a restored one?

I got a survivor (a complete) that I'm going to sell, a Schwinn Tange (Japanese made) Predator with ARX forks. But it's rusty and got a lot of OG looking stickers.

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

How about reconditioning a bike to new condition,
then riding the hell out of it to mimic a survivor?

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

Thats all i collect.  OG finish stuff.

I find it more of a adventure to find the nicest my pocket can buy, then to buy a turd and have it restored.

There is nothing wrong with a restored bike....it just doesnt catch my eye or vote at the gatherings.

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

I have only ever re-finished 1 bike, my white PK, and it was painted not powdered.

I dont agree with powdering anything and all my builds now are done with survivor parts..... nothing refinished, as for parting a survivor, well usually the parts go into other "survivor builds", unless its something special then it should be saved.

If bikes weren't parted out we would all have to build with repop parts...

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

Save the survivors, I do!
(check out my collection of geese an such)
Save them all if possible, unless they are really bad and rusting away.
Then part them out or restore?

I'm looking for the following frames, frame & forks or completes by BMX products:
MotoTrac (nickle or chrome), Racer-X or a Super-X (with the double gussets preferred).

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

Initially I had planned a full restore of this bike. I still might...

This bike is my survivor 1991 R.L. Inc. Bully Bashguard I. I have owned it since 1994 and i am responsible for all the scuffs and wear on it.

I have begun to collect reproduction stuff for it for the restore.

I would love to see this bike restored to it's former glory but part of me loves it the way it is, regardless of whether or not I restore it I still might put the new decals on it just because they look cool.
