1979 Mongoose Supergoose

OG Chrome, Tange TRX Fork, & Sugino stem

Restored for a friend, this OG 1979 Supergoose had seen better days when I got it. Stored in a damp basement for over 25 years the chrome was lightly peppered with rust, all but the down tube "SUPERGOOSE" decal's were missing, & when the bike was in service, the last owner had decided to store it's chain & padlock wrapped around the top tube. I'm glad he kept it safe with the lock... just wish he had not HAZED up the entire top tube with the chain rub!!!

This is how I received the F&F, and stem...After I removed the stem & fork I did a BIG Scrub down on all parts. For the frame I decided to resurface the chrome, & when I say resurface I DON'T mean RE-CHROME. Re-surfacing, chrome can be a tricky procedure, using super fine grades of sand-paper, & steel wool, all tubes are rubbed until all swirls, small light scratches, and light surface rust/peppering are removed. This can take hours & hours to do properly but once you have a light soft even haze on all tubes, the POLISHING can begin. I used a cordless 18V drill & a buffing wheel, & went from red polishing compound and ended with blue compound. The entire re-surfacing took close to 25 hours for the frame, but the results were AWESOME... before & after shots don't really show how well the shine came back to this frame. The fork had far to much penetrated RUST to try & resurface, so in an attempt to keep the cost down I repainted these classic BMX Tange TRX forks with a high gloss metallic silver fleck, & added NOS Tange decals to finish them off, Before...after rust removal...& after paint...The stem was a labor of love, Old School Sugino stem nothing too special, but I wanted to try & salvage it to keep it as original as I could, tons of hammer marks & it had been painted at least 2 times...So refinishing the stem required some sandpaper, several fine files, & again steel wool in a few different grades 0 to 0000, using the files to lessen the appearance of hammer marks & scratches. the results were great & I was able to salvage the entire stem & it's hardware...& afterOverall a really fun project
that turned out pretty sweet. Just some before and after shots...& after polish... & after...
