1985 Redline RL-20II
1985 Redline RL-20II
White/Chrome Survivor... Not 100% sure its an 85.. it might be an 86... the debate rages on.
I just dragged this out of the patio closet after being tucked away for years.
This belonged to my best friends kid brother... when he grew out of it, it was stored until he moved out of state.. called me and asked if I wanted it.. aired up the tires and rode it home... washed it and polished it, then tucked it away in the closet... that was over 10 years ago. Now, while doing renovations, the stuff that was tucked away in the closet needed to be moved... at the top of the pile were 6 bicycles... this was the gem in the rough.
Its a survivor.. and after a debate over what year it is... it seems to be a Taiwan built 1985... it bears S/N 510218 and is registered in Hawaii as a 1985.
First pic after it was cleaned and made road ready... and after a short ride. New repop Comp ST tires from porkchop bmx, general cleaning and tune up... still more to go.. new number plate, new white cables, and possibly an ACS stem and related parts.
Second pic is the S/N.. after this pic was taken the paint was scraped off the surrounding area on the BB to assure there were no other hidden numbers... the numbers stamped in white seem to have no bearing on the identity of the bike... it was only in the white.
So.. I joined up here to realize that I kept this all these years for a reason....

REDLINE RL-20 II... some say its an '85 others say its an '86... It's never been painted or refinished, Its not perfect.... but like me it still works.

Thats an 85, and its made in Japan. Whoever scraped the paint on the bb well should not have, and it looks like they got very carried away, because they even scrapped off the chrome....thats a shame.
WTB Forklifter freestyle bars, no internal rust, perfect ends.
WTB Peregrine Super Pros, not pitted.
WTB Kuwahara freestyle stem engraved.

There is no chrome scrapped off the BB, in fact, more white was taken off to investigate the additional numbers.... I found the redline logo and nothing else other than the 510xxx number
This bike spent close to 15 years in a damp storage area... and in the end it came out fine...
Thanks for your concern though.

Investigating the serial number was an adventure in itself... if you look at my thread: "Project RL20II you'll see the debate over how to determine year.

Hello.. I have listed the bike for sale locally to see what kind of interest there is in it.
Since the bike was restored to ridable, I have aquired several items for it (not installed though)
Original flight 401's (single pinch, full wrap) with unsealed bearing set (havent got around to getting a techmatic set)
'86 era hutch pedals (bought with the understanding that if it were my bike, it would take that long to have bought all the good stuff for it)
43T bubble font chainring
ACS stem and cable set (new)
Redline axle pegs (4)
As it is... I have learned everything is for sale at the right price.
