Half link or no half link?! That is the question....

My nephew Crash, keeps trying to convince me to put a half link chain on my bike. For his bday I got him a dk half link for his WTP,and that is a chain that appears to be over kill lol

I also heard they break alot, and hurt sprockets. Is this true?

I need some opinions here......

Re: Half link or no half link?! That is the question....

there is no need for a full half-link chain. if you need to dial in your wheel, a single half-link is all you need.

Half-links stretch more than regular chains and are weaker and heavier.

Re: Half link or no half link?! That is the question....

He's one of the best racers out there, voted rider of the year and and a regular on the pro gate finals in any event. As a 20+ year vet on 2 wheels, everything from my first BMX race in the early 80's to my last race as a road cyclist in 2007, one thing was always known. Theres 2 opinions when it comes to equipement, those who ride and those who ride and get paid. The third opinion are those who just say whatever they heard from people who just ride. If a pro level rider such as Barry Nobles uses this kind of chain, hes either very stupid, very lucky, or he knows what he's doing. I pick the third choice.............While im sure there are horror stories with every product ever used, one thing is certain. These high level pro's put out enormous torque and have insane power to weight ratio's on the cranks. The watts they produce are unreal. If this guy as well as many others are using KWEG half link chains and not breaking thier faces, its because they work. and if they work for them, chances are they will work for anyone on this site or any AA pro gate as well. When forced to choose between everyday riders thoughts and full blown factory pro's, I would feel confident from riders like Barry. Thats just me though........

Re: Half link or no half link?! That is the question....

Half links are for small pesky drop out.
A lot of pro frames have vary little room to adj your rear wheel. So to make it easy they made half links.
I have yet to brake a half link, I use to ride RHD and I grind rh side.. So I went throw a bunch of the strongest Kcm chains they made till my boy gave me a half link... And I never broke it and I hit some hard ledges.
Now I'm LHD and I don't have to worry.
It does not really save weight but they are stronger then you can guess.m

Bt yea I never broken half link, and it's the ONLY Thing I own from shadow conspiracy and will ever own, I diss like that co.

So really bro you don't need it endless you plain on grinding

Not true,
I broke about 5 Kcm chains, all the "strongest" ones they make... I broke it ever week. Then I got a hlf link and I have yet to snap one..... And I ride park.. So how did yours brake...

Re: Half link or no half link?! That is the question....

I have six bikes with half links and have been using half links for the last five years never once having one of them fail. These bikes are all dirt jumped or street ridden regularly and the half links work perfect. Spend the money on a quality chain and you should have no problems.

Re: Half link or no half link?! That is the question....

all chains will snap at some point wink
the main reason why a halflink would snap is if say you do a 180 and you spin out of the fakie really fast. overtime that will happen to a normal chain too.
halflink are better then a normal chain when it comes down to grinding because they protect more, and they wont snap as easy if you land on your chain by mistake.

There's a big difference between racing and riding street/park. Pros dont ever use the same chain for a whole season. They get new chains like every other race. Perks of being sponsored.  Out of all the half link chain ive only really heard good about kwegco. Im going to try one this year on my race bike. But i plan to stick with a regular kmc chain for my trails/street bike.

On the look out for Bonzai frames, Cardboard Lords Emanicaptor/Liberator frames, Hawk frames, and anything BRAND X!!!

Re: Half link or no half link?! That is the question....

If your bike isn't broke, don't fix it. Use a half link chain if you can't get your rear wheel where you want it. I'm using a odyssey blue bird chain and it's very nice...

Yes
If your not grinding on that side no need
You have a compleat rt..?
Your drop out are small, but no where near as small and pesky as a pro frame. So no real need. And you know I ride hard!!
