The HMX series was a low priced bike for average kids circa 80 - 85, they were produced locally by Healing (Hence "H"MX). The HMX 500 was notorious for cracking up around the head tube, the single gusset wasn't enough for the regular steel frame, and it's pretty rare to see a 500 anymore simply because of that - Mine went to the dump in 82, and was replaced by the superior HMX600! haha, not much changed between the two except the 600 got slightly larger diameter main tubes, and a double gusset up near the head tube, and Skyway Tuffs. Though they can still be seen at garage sales now and then.

They served nearly every kid in New Zealand pretty well, the thing is we're a small nation, so the market for bikes was a lot smaller, hence when they get thrown away - they're gone. It's not really in our culture to horde stuff.

In saying that, BMX in New Zealand in the decade from the mid 70's, to the mid 80's was HUGE, and we certainly never had a shortage of the "exotics" I grew up in a middle class type suburb, and my mates had Kuwahara's, Skyways, Rippers, Hutches, Redlines etc etc etc, they were a pretty common sight really, though the "holy Grail" for this 10 yr old in 84 was a Skyway TA. BMX sent Skateboarding into the "dark years" here, and followed 6 - 7 years later or so.

I still see NOS label sets for HMX series bikes popping up on the local auction site now and then, as well as  period brakes, cranks, and the other bits n pieces.

Pantha BMX is the harder NZ made bike to find..I'm restoring a Pantha Scout at the Mo , complete with NZ version of Mongoose moto mags, Made of alloy but called Honey-Comb's..
Pantha made two 20" bikes, stud and scout, 16" pit bike was called a Pantha Cub, 24" race bike was called a Assasian...I belive the pantha people sold out in the end to Avanti..

Getting back to HMX the first model with No gusset were all recalled and replaced and frames were all dumped by Healings... as they broke within a week..Just like the First pantha Stud...Remember the undercoat grey Pantha's?. 1979 ish..

Gutsy one I think off hand was made by Morrison  at the same time as anther Hybrid BMX called a griffter...

Old Skoola : I have a few old Morrison manuals , I'll look it up...Being a Morrison and having Z-Rims , does it have twin gussets that look like a "M" rather than the healing "H"...I'm sure only factory morrison with Z's was the Super-X ,and snake belly tyres.Anther thing to look at.The Z-Rims probley arnt what they seam..by the valve hole they say made in ozzie?..at the time ACS Z-Rims were Pat Pending...so copys were made in ozzie ,,I think when ACS pat came thru the place in ozzie stopped making them..

linwood i have had a closer look at the morrison rims and have found that the rim has acs-z rim pat pend by the valve hole and has made in australia for marlyn  p/l it also has a date written inside the rim in black permanent marker 17/7/81 it may be 17/9/81 can't tell as there is a spoke in the middle where the month is ,does this shed any light on it ?

The USA Z-Rims that are pat pending have a date stamp done with a date stamper in Ink..On the inner side.

hi linwood i was on e bay and i see your bidding on a set of tange forks over in aus  i have a set of chrome tx 500 forks they need to be re chromed if you were wanting a set of minters but they are'nt bent or cracked  let me know if your keen ,i also have a supermax fluted seatpost as well
