2012 SUMMER OPEN BUILD-OFF, SPONSORED BY PLANETBMX.COM & BMXMUSEUM.COM
OK, boys... this is mine and nuggetts first build-off.. The concept is different, and will hopefully test the creativity of the membership.
THE SCHEDULE AND RULES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
THREADS:
1) Entering and posting of a before frame/fork pic ,CLOSES ON 4/29/2012 @ 11:59 CST . There will be a three week window to do this. (don't worry, there will be a general interest thread before it to give you a heads up to get moving on a frameset)If you don't post in this thread, you are ineligible.
2)4/30/2012 - 7/8/2012 @ 11:59 CST : Discussion, build up, and sneak peek thread... Post comments, pics, ask questions about the contest. This will be a 10 week window.(seems long, but many guys just miss the deadlines by no fault of their own)
3)7/9/2012 - 7/23/2012 @ 11:59 CST: Submission thread.A two week window. This is where it counts. Take your best pics, description , a parts breakdown, and post it here. Post one drive side pic, and a link to the other pics which must meet the museum criteria for bike submission.
4)Judging thread. This thread will be open for one to two weeks, depending on participation. We will post the results of the judges tally, and any of their comments.( two judges will be mod/admin and two will be members who will be anonymous until the results are posted.)
RULES/REQUIREMENTS:
1) This will be OPEN CLASS. 20"/24"26",Race,Freestyle,Cruiser, etc. The era will be 1995 and earlier. Your frameset MUST BE FROM 1995 OR EARLIER AND THREADED . No new school parts are allowed. All parts should be from the era or be repops of era parts...i.e. Profile retros, new dia compes, etc... If its a copy of an era part, its OK. No Eastern seats or stuff like that..
2) CREATIVITY IS KING. The judging will be weighted more toward a thoughtful, creative, or innovative build over one that simply cost a lot.Be original. Build a bike how you think it should have been, or have a feature that was ahead of its time. You get the idea.. Your brain is the best tool you have, use it..
2a) THIS IS IMPORTANT!! NO factory spec, magazine ad,tribute or replica builds will be allowed. This contest is centered on coming up with an original bike that is thought through and assembled with craftsmanship in mind. That doesn’t necessarily mean high dollar will win, since it still could be a janky turd. You also CANNOT have this bike in another buildoff during the timeline... no doubling down..You also must build the bike within the contest, after all...this is a build-off.
2b) In your submission post, include a short explanation of your concept or thought process for the build. This could be key in an accurate scoring for your bike.
3) You may use an existing frame and fork, and it can be anything you like in the era requirements.(it can be pre, or post restoration, doesnt matter)
4) Tires may be authentic or be new.. NOTE: They must be a" type " that was used in the era..( copies of Comp ST, Comp III,IV, etc. are permitted. No Odyssey Aitkens' or any nonsense like that..
5)If you do not fulfill the requirements before submission closing, you will forfeit your entry. You may edit and make corrections during the submission time, even if it is already posted.
6) Multiple entries ARE permitted. But, they must be from different classes .e.g. 1- 20",1-24",race, freestyle...etc.
JUDGING:
1) The judges will be anonymous, and have the final say in the results of the build off. There will be (4), two admin/mods and two members.
2) Each judge will assign a score to every bike from 1-10, the total of all judges for each bike will be added and that will be your score. The highest total from 1st to 3rd will be the winners.Any ties will be broken by judge debate.
3) Since this is an open class build off, the bikes will be judged on creativity, attention to detail, and overall concept .Cost will not play a factor, and rarity will only matter if it works with the concept.
There will be awards for 1st thru 3rd place...they are in the works..
Sharpen your pencils boys... you gotta work for this one.![]()
Any questions...PM D.F.T.R , OR NUGGETT....THX.

To answer some questions. A member here had a trick star, era correct right? He had Suntour CC brakes, correct right? He melded them together and came up with a sweet ass setup. Not new.... Old school.... With a twist.

Sounds like a cool concept but I am a bit reluctant after the last build off with the amount of work time and thought that I put into the build only to get blown off by some bs votes
Don't get me wrong I'm certainly not saying that my build was better than anybody elses but when a detailed bike gets blown off for one that's dirty something is wrong ![]()
I'M NOT ON HERE REGULARLY. WORKING ON MY HOTROD

I would be in except for this. NO factory spec, magazine ad,tribute or replica builds will be allowed. Kinda seems like you're pigeon holing this build off. Just my $.02

You're right. This is a " come up with your own idea" buildoff off...There are a lot of great concepts here and we thought they should be recognized.

I'd like to jump in please as I was just getting ready to start prepping a 78'-79' Race Inc Frame for paint.
I had full intentions to find and buy hubs and spokes off here to rebuild a wheel set that I still have the araya rims from when I was a kid so now's my chance. Now that I say that, I could get another plate, bars, and stem while I'm at it too, yee haw, new to me parts yeppieeeeee.
I like the open class part too as our bikes were always multi use as I am sure most others were too.
Ummm, a 78' part freestyle, part race rig, part daily rider, Race Inc......huh.
mmmm........loop tails.......

I think the only problem is the system of judging. Let the members vote I would say.

This method eliminates the "bro vote". Then your bikes stands on its own merits....No one can say they didn't get a fair shake, ALL will be judged/ scored.

sounds like this will be really fun and a blast to do, so im in.
i have never done a build off before. i was thinking i had the perfect bike for this and then i kept reading the rules and saw it has to be pre 91', so it looks like ill be building something else, all era correct.
When can i submit the frame and fork, have you posted the frame fork submit thread yet?

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy.
