Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

So maybe i missed this already. If so, my bad.  Does this work with just sunlight and peroxide? or does it need to be warm outside as well?  I have some pieces im getting ready to try this on and I have a south facing window that gets sushine all day so I want to do this inside during the winter.  Will it work or am I wasting my time?

IMHO, the heat helps get it done quicker.

I've done stuff in the winter, but it takes a lot longer.......sun not up as long or as strong.

I think of it this way..... If you can get a sunburn that day, its perfect for the peroxide sunshine method.

Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

I have my hutch o.g.k. mags in an upside down trash can lid soaking in peroxide in the sun..I used 14 32oz bottles from my local Dollar Tree store. Lots of dark black-ish peppering on the mags and very yellowed. I will post results pics when first mag is done.

Here's how I got them.

Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

next time, order salon 40 from sally beauty for 5.39 for a 32 oz bottle.  you can do 7 or 8 pairs of mags with that bottle. and it clings to the surface.

Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

Fill the empty bottles with water, lid them, put them between the spokes.  That will raise the fluid level and use less peroxide.

I used nearly ALL of a 32 oz $6 bottle of volume 40 bought locally with cash for ONE PAIR of wheels but I didn't have to buy a trash can lid or soak anything.  The liquid (submerged) method might be faster and takes less attention but costs more and might take longer.

Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

If anyone is interested... Sally's has this on sale right now for $3.00 on their website...

Amazon wants $12 for a similar bottle...

I'm gonna try the Vinyl Dye on one and this on another, see what works best...

Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

I have just enough 40 Volume left over from the wheels to whiten the white Viscount Dominator for my latest build....FS-1 (that will have BLACK Skyway OEs lol).  My blue lettering is already faded so we'll see if the peroxide makes it worse.

Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

The salon 40 creme worked a treat, with a teaspoon of Oxy washing powder stain remover added to activate it. My OGK mags came up great. Similar result on a white Kuwahara seat.

I gave it another go after these pics and got it a little whiter again. I noticed the peroxide just starting to attack the aluminum hubs. You have to watch for that. Maybe a lower strength % peroxide would do the whitening without attacking the aluminum ???

Re: Whitening yellowed hard plastic (ABS?) pedals

Yup, just finishing off a pink Magician. Nearly done.
The gold logo on the seat wasn't touched by the peroxide. I tried it on a junk seat with some lettering on first, just in case.

Thank you sir, i appreciate it!

I build a pink magician for the spring build off this year.  I wanted to do something to whiten the seat didn't want to lose the stamping.

Look forward to seeing your build.
