1987 Kent Concept Ultra-Style

As with all my bikes, this one has it's story too.
December 26, 1988 (My 7th birthday). My mom took me into the local Kiddie City to pick out my very first bike. I remember the whole day like yesterday. I walked down the isle all the way to the end. It sounded like this.......no. no. no. no. no. no. no no.........no...........THATS THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!
I remember taking the bike home and driving around the block to show the neighborhood kids. I used to tell everyone it was called a Concept because I didn't know right away that it wa a Kent.  I was the first kid in my age group to get a BMX bike. A week later everyone had them . I was a hero for that last week of 1988 though.

Fast foward to 2012. After getting back into BMX after 15 years I got wondering as to what the bike was I had as a kid. I even posted a thread in the Name It forum. All I knew was it was green with white wheel plates and white parts. After searching obsessively for weeks with no results this completely unmolested survivor bike popped up in the classifieds. When I saw the bike it was like a giant hammer hitting me in the head. THATS MY BIKE!!!! I struck a deal with the owner who was great to deal with and now it's mine again after 24 years. This bike was only living 45 minutes away from my house. It also seems to be extremely rare as I have searched endlessly and there is one other like it on the internet and it's here in the museum (Where it belongs).
The more I look at this bike the more childhood memories come flying at me. That is the best part of this hobby.  My 4 year old will be riding this around in a few years. Thats pretty amazing also. Thanks for reading!!!

Re: 1987 Kent Concept Ultra-Style

I had a red one of these bitd. I had cracked my frame and the only thing any of my friends had on hand was a Kent Concept so I decked it out with the parts off my GT. It was a bit heavier than my other bikes but it actually rode great, it was durable and never broke on me.

Do I owe you feedback? Please remind me via PM and I'll take care of it.

Re: 1987 Kent Concept Ultra-Style

Wow, I just started checking this site out a few weeks ago and my oldest son and I were talking bikes. He asked me what my first bike was and I told him my first bmx was a green and white kent with spoke covers on it. And I googled it and heres the same bike on here with the same age and time frame of ownership and I just wanted to say that its great. I would love to find one now. Those pics hit the memory bone dead on. If you ever think about letting it go let me know. Awesome.

Really great story. I'm still searching for my first bike and I can't even imagine what it would feel like to find it.
Glad you found your first love lol.

Man thats awesome!! When I put this bike into this museum I knew it was right where it belonged. Thats what makes this one of the coolest sites on the interent by far. I only rode the bike maybe one and putted around the driveway with it with my daughter on my lap. One of the neighbors came out and said man, that things gotta be from the 80's, lol

After that I put the bike away for storage because i'm in the process of moving. When I get my new house and garage/workshop i'm gonna put the bike in the air as a decoration away from all the other stuff. At this time I have no intentions of selling because I own it for practicly nothing and it's bringing back a million memories every day.

When I was about 10 years old I rigged a giant sqaure 80's flashlight to the front handlebars and rode all around the neighborhood at like 10pm at night. Just remembered that the other day. lol

The beauty of this hobby is that the connection between you and this bike is priceless, even if others might view it as a "department store" bike.

Re: 1987 Kent Concept Ultra-Style

* I was in the garage last night working on an Auburn and I was looking across the garage at this bike.

Around 1989 or so I was at the park across the street from my house. I was talking to some older kids from the neighborhood (12-13 years old) and one of them was hinting to me that good bikes don't have those wheel covers and since mine are already beat and have holes in them we should get rid of them.
Me and the older kids went to town busting the plastic out the wheels for 10 minutes, cool
than it just looked like a regular bike!

I didn't know they had one in grey. Mine actually lasted a few years aside from me ripping the wheels plates out of it.

Re: 1987 Kent Concept Ultra-Style

It was exactly the same as yours, except for the green. It was grey/white with orange lettering, and grey tires instead of the white. Wish I had a pic of it, but I don't. I got a good season out of it, and that was it. Then a friend gave me an extra Norco frame/fork he had sitting around to get me buy until I could get another bike.
