Saved this old Webco from being scrapped
Hi I was recently visiting family in SC. My mother in law told me that the old cotton gin down the road was beng taken down because it had partially collapsed. Well the next day we drove by it and I seen this old bike leaning up against the fence. An hour or so later I slipped out and drove up there. I got there just in time as it was being hauled off. I asked the guy about it and he said it was his bike from new and he had left it there 30 some odd years ago. He said he got the Webco because his friends were breaking their bikes. He said he also upgraded to the thicker spokes. He also told me that he had painted at some point and that it was originally blue. He also said that it was all og but he may have changed the tires at some point. I told him I would love to have it and made him an offer he couldnt refuse. He accepted and I was on cloud nine. Dont know alot them except that they are huge piece of bmx history. It had the square undrilled brake bridge. The sn# is W36567. Any info would be awesome. I would like to find a correct seat and post.

Thankyou. How can I tell a replica from the true Webco?

Replica was a model name from Webco. It is a real Webco. The square brake bridge and the hole in the chainstay block are good indicators.

Re: Saved this old Webco from being scrapped
The Webco serials don't have any dating info that I'm aware of,but the Ashtabula cranks and stem will have a 2 digit stamp that tells the year they were made.No doubt they are original to the bike.

Re: Saved this old Webco from being scrapped
Thanks, very cool. So its probably a replica then. Looking around on the site I have determined that the seat post should be 7/8". What kind of seat was common on these. Troxel? Also looking at the cranks, forks, and stem I see no markings where as the asthtabula stuff seem to have it on the somewhere. What year year(s) would you guys guess this to be? Thanks for the info.

Re: Saved this old Webco from being scrapped
You should be able to find a 2 digit stamp on the inside of the fork dropouts, too. You'd have to take the wheel off to see it.Take a close look at that little nub on the cranks that goes into the chainwheel. It will be stamped on 2 sides, one being the year, the other will say 40,or something like that.Anyone can take a guess.I'll guess '77 since there is no hole in the bridge.

Are you sure? I was sure that W36567 decoded to Webco, made March(3) 65th(65) of 1967(67). That's on the Mayan calendar, so, I don't expect most folks understand it.![]()
Certainly a nice save. Some guys here truly will get you dialed into the actual dates, but as Kai noted, the stem and cranks will have a date code and that will really help.
Have fun with it!

Re: Saved this old Webco from being scrapped
Thats funny Kai, I will take a closer look at it. Thank you all very much for your help. I love this thing... Only the second owner after 35 ish years. Awesome. I have noticed on other ashtabula forks that "Ashtabula is Molded into the side of the fork. Is that a newer or older version of the same fork? It looks as though the guy, when he was a child, peeled off the seat post decal and put it on the head tube after he painted it. At least the others I ve looked at have the WI decal on the seat tube. Do you think the stem is ashtabula as well? BTW it does appear as though the stem is slightly bent forward. I think most everything will clean up real nice. Light surface rust mainly. Steel Araya rims look pretty darn good. Restore or just replace what is missing and clean it up? Im kinda a pureist but this one os on the fence and a pretty easy restore. If I can get the correct colors, blue and black, I have a professional painter buddy Ive know for ions that will paint it for hardly nothing. I have all the mediablasting equipment. And i am working on a os bath setup. PS the tt of handlebars is gone. The welds have been smoothed out so I dont know if it was removed on purpose or if it broke and then was removed. Are the handle bars Wald bars?

I think Mark was poking fun at the fact that Webco serials don't define the manufacture date like other brands. Probably also making fun of some of the mythos surrounding dating arguments, I'm sure. ![]()
I also agree that the cranks and stem are likely original to the bike and will help greatly to give a dating on this bike since there is certainly a date-stamp on either/both of them.

Ashtabula made both stamped and unstamped forks concurrently.Same with stems.

Re: Saved this old Webco from being scrapped
Yes Scraplord I meant scrapped, lol. I will check the cranks and forks hopefully tonight. And since it was already repainted and decals removed I think I will restore it. I need the seat, seat post, decals, maybe a stem, and a set of bars for it. Would also like to get the color code if anyone happens to have it for the correct blue.
Old school rules- gl with your search for the nickel plated reline forks.
Koolaid man thanks for clarifying kind of thought that might be the case.

Bars may be original Webco. Check others in the Museum to compare. I have been looking for an original Webco chainwheel like yours to complete my Webco build. Nice score, enjoy it!
