Brian Blythers Bike....
hey guys .... I was thinking of building a Blyther tribute bike. I have looked at various old photos, and I cant figure out what kind of stem and handlebars he had when he rode his famous day glow red Haro ?? Also ... I read this on another website .....
The reality is that Blyther rarely rode an actual FST Frame as he found it too short and uncomfortable (18.5 ) for his tall frame, but his popularity in
the sport made the association a smart move. Haro overcame the size issue by painting a 1984 U.S Made Sport;
Neon Red and adding FST decals. The Sport was a longer frame with a slacker head angle and offered more stability
on vert
does anyone know if this is indeed a fact ??

Don't think you'll have too much trouble finding pics of that red FST - it was pretty well photographed. Here's a pic to get you started though...

Re: Brian Blythers Bike....
I ALWAYS loved that choice of red that Haro had gone with for the FST. I'm looking forward to watching this thread. Will you maybe go with the old 1984 Sport, and have it painted red, then put FST decals onto it? I coulda sworn Blyther rode Ukai rims on that....

Re: Brian Blythers Bike....
Doesn't look like he was running anything exotic.... That's a true marketing genius (on Haro's part)

Re: Brian Blythers Bike....
That bike is a stock red FST. I keep in touch with Brian and have soken a few times with him about his set up. He actually quite often rode a 84 sport painted up as a FST as the FST Frame was a little short for him. Sometimes you can see him riding a bike with a gusset behind the bottom bracket which is the tell tale sign its a sport.
Stock FST Information -

In early 85 he also rode a chrome sport. Haro recieved a number of prototypes from Anlen in February/march although they were sports and masters. On that bike he rode woody itson bars and probably a tuff neck stem.
I can add more to this if aybody needs more information.

Re: Brian Blythers Bike....
OK Sorry to hijack here. Ill add more FST info later so this thread is useful to NOPOSERS. I have some good shots of BB on that bike.
I spent some time in the US in September staying with Bob, Ron W and Blyther. Ron and Brian gave me over 1200 of their own photographs taken on tour during the 1980's. Also some amazing shots from the pipeline.
Heres a few shots of the trip that i took with Stephan Prantl (we the people founder and BMX Masters event organiser). A few from the Baldy pipe and various places as well as the olympic training facility in Chula Vista. The benefit of turning up with Mr H and some VIP behind the scenes access ![]()

Re: Brian Blythers Bike....
I know during the early days Brian ran my bars on his bike. For that matter so did Mike D, Wilkerson, and Rich Sigur. It wasn't until Haro kind of pushed the issue that they started running Haro bars. Good luck on your build.

Re: Brian Blythers Bike....
Ill dig into some pictures later and post some up. I think Woody is correct, the 85 Haro line up were marketed heavily as completes and Blyther joined late 84 when models were changing, so started riding a prototype sport frame in chrome that he probably spec'd himself with parts. As soon as the 85's started landing from taiwan in around May its highly likely he was asked to ride factory parts.

I've also seen some shots of Blyther in 85-86 Freestylin' - riding a red FST or Sport - with Red Haro Group 1 Race bars.
I'll have to try to dig that image up.

My God, man - those personal photographs from BITD are quite literally jewels & gems - moments in this sport's history that have never been seen before. I urge you - beg you - to post some of those images for all of us who have literally memorized the photos in all the magazines and yearn for some new imagery to fill our mental image banks with...! Unbelievable, Domphippsio....
My apologies for this blatant hijack, but come on....unreal.

Do you by any chance have any of them in alaska? A friend's cousin said they were up here back in the day, but it might've been the nineties...
That guy had a drawer full of old nice parts that I was supposed to get when he moved, but it got thrown out... probably one of the reasons I'm on here
