1978 Murray MX

Overlord Bicycles "The Beastable"

This bike is the reason I got back into BMX.  Found it on Ebay and fell in love with it because it was so weird looking (see last photo).  $100 later, it was all mine.

Since the kid that originally owned this bike attempted some backyard customization with a can of Rust-o-leum, I decided to finish what he started, instead of doing a factory-new restoration.
The entire bike was dismantled upon receiving it the mail; everything was cleaned, stripped, and restored.  I had no choice but to replace some pieces, but tried my best to keep with the original owner's artistic vision.  I kept the color scheme of black, gold, and gray.  All black parts were powder coated, while the gray and gold were painted by me at home.  The restoration was an expensive project of time and money that became a daily obsession, and might just have saved my sanity.  I am very pleased with the result of my labor; a classic piece of suburban Americana is ready rock again!
This bike was part of the 1970's line of kid's motocross bikes that were primarily sold through department stores by Murray Manufacturing Company of Ohio.  Murray also manufactured these bikes for Sears, under the Sears brand, and other smaller stores.  You will find similar bikes made by Western Flyer from the same era.  All of which feature the cantilever frame and springer fork.
I named the bike after my cat (and best friend), who is known as "the Beastable" in my neighborhood.  She oversaw much of the project personally.
*A big thanks to the forum members of BMXMuseum for their patience, insight, and assistance during the process.
**See the restoration thread here on BMXMuseum that shows the entire process HERE.

Re: 1978 Murray MX

Yeah, that thing is awesome! cool

When you compute the length of time between the "EVENT" and "THE NOSTALGIA FOR THE EVENT", the span seems to be about a year less in every cycle.
Eventually the nostalgia cycles will be so close together that people will not be able to take a step without being nostalgic for the one they just took.
At that point, everything stops. DEATH BY NOSTALGIA. Frank Zappa

Thanks, Jay!  This one was a fun creative project.  Very cool that it is giving you some inspiration for your own builds.  I'm looking forward to seeing them.smile

I'm really flattered that you dig the build.  Thank you!  I appreciate the offer, but I'm working on getting a Roger DeCoster up and running at the moment.
