Excess brand freewheels?

They make some pretty big claims about them on their site. It looks like they've only been on the market about a year. The only bad thing I can see is you have to buy their 8 prong install tool. I even emailed them and was told that as of yet there's been no failures reported. They're about a 1/4 of the price of a White Industries one. Has anyone tried one yet?

Re: Excess brand freewheels?

yup. ran it all summer on my Kovachi hubs. you don't need the 8 prong tool, a standard 4 prong works fine.

Never had one but what I can tell you is that the White industries will be the last FW you will ever need Smooth / the tight loose spot is minimal and the sound is superve, needless to say it has 2ice as many engagement teeth and you can do yourmaintnace on it. I loved mine and I am going back to it again.

They look like a great freewheel, and 1/3 of the cost of a White Industries with the same features.

No failures reported seems kind of hard to believe, but they're pretty cheap, I may have to give one a try.

Re: Excess brand freewheels?

Don't forget when they told me no failures that I think it just came out in the spring. I'm glad to see that someone has installed one with a regular 4 prong tool. They told me I needed one of their 8 prong ones which is another $12

Re: Excess brand freewheels?

Anyone else ride with an Excess freewheel?

I've haven't found many reviews online except for one that said is was sloppy.  I'm debating between the Excess and ACS Crossfire or any decent freewheel brand under $30.

GT Ratchet Freewheel.  120 engagement points, about $30, had zero issues with it and have yet to hear of any from anyone else.
No wobbles, tight/loose spots, lines up great, installs with regular ACS 4 prong tool.

Re: Excess brand freewheels?

I just installed a new Excess one on my Big Ripper and it feels great. Now I just need to ride the heck out of it and see if it holds up. It looks like a real nice quality piece. I will also confirm that a standard 4 prong tool fits it just fine. Don't waste your money on their 8 prong removal tool.

Thanks, that one looks really sweet, but unfortunately it doesn't come in the tooth count that I need at the moment.  I need a 15t and a 20t.

Re: Excess brand freewheels?

They are hit and miss.  The one I purchased was a miss.  Big tight/loose spot and wobbly.  BTW a standard 4 prong tool removes it just fine.

If it has tits or tires, it's gonna give you problems.

Re: Excess brand freewheels?

Mine has been a little spotty too. It feels pretty good most of the time but I've had it skip maybe 3 times in about 200 or so miles if you catch it in just the wrong spot.
