1975 AAA Rascal

Origional Blue Annodised Rascal

Sometimes the 35+ yr old faded annodising looks blue, sometimes purple, but to me always beautiful
I believe the frame was found on a farm somewhere in Illinois. Thanks to Scott Buhlig for finding out what it was (via the museum) and possibly saving it from the scrap heap.  Very faded seat-tube decal appears to say: 'Custom Design Bike Factory' - was this a local bike shop of the time that anyone can remember?
Always wanted an annodised frame after seeing pictures of some of the rare early SE Racing PK's and Floval's where this was used.   Was on the look out for a Rascal after previously missing out on a painted frame, so couldn't believe my luck when this one turned up - I LOVE it!
When you look at the construction, you can see almost all the features that would evolve a few years later into the looptail PK Ripper.   One difference, apart from the geometry, is this appears to have a factory-drilled hole behind the bottom bracket...for a kickstand!?
Rascals never seem to have any decals left on them - I suppose it is a slightly geeky name for such a kick-ass frame...and the decal features a cartoon character who looks like he's from The Beano or something...probably something to do with it
Tear-drop drop outs are perfect, frame is light and straight, but like a million other early alluminium bmx's - the top of the seat tube cracked off at some point...she probably should have a new seat-tube, but there are too few origional anno' frames around so I am keeping her as-is
Build is starting to look pretty sweet with early unstamped Tuff 1s, 2.125"s, Redline forks, Persons seat, cebe stem, Race Inc expert bars, Grab On's...and that leopard-print pad...   Looking for crank...and maybe Union pedals??
Bill Bastian and his team brought so much quality and radness to the world of bmx - Kawasaki, Triple A, FMF, Cycle Pro, Race Inc, and SE Racing - that's some nice welding!

Re: 1975 AAA Rascal

hi, thanks - she's a beauty!  your faded blue one sounds great, be good to see it one day.  a '77 DG? ha ha I'd love one of those too!  one came up on the 'bay recently, but my money is spent for now with existing bikes. & this one needs a little tuning, some of the parts are a little new-looking...hopefully I can get her just right eventually  smile

Re: 1975 AAA Rascal

I had a red one years ago.  I had the seat post mast welded with a heliarc welder, which was the most recommended method way back in the 80's. Not sure if there's a better way now, but that did the trick back then.
