Removing Spraybombed Paint?

Okay, so when I get home from Iraq I have a project I didn't have in mind.  I have a mid-school, 1996 I think, Schwinn Predator that WAS red and in pretty good shape.  My son's friend borrowed it from us and didn't bring it back because he left it outside in the front yard and it got stolen.  The kid that took it lived about four houses down and they got it back.  Problem is that the thief painted almost everything primer grey.  I can clean up most stuff but the frame I would like to be gentle on because of the decals.  I would like to at least save them enough that they might be salvaged to make copies.  I know it's not a big deal bike but I'd like to put it back right and don't mind repainting it but I want to do it with decals and such.  What can I do to save the paint/decals?  Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

Maybe try some Laquer thinner, and then a wash afterwards. just a little on a rag and wipe, not a soak or anything like that.
I'm doubting the og paint will look the best anyway.
Edit- If your trying to save decals don't use thinner on them, maybe some of that citrus cleaner.
never used it but I've heard it talked about on here before

Thanks, I'll give it a try and I'll do some searching to see if I can find a thread on here about it.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

That's what I have in mind is to get to the OG paint and decals to see if I can save them (decals).  I don't know if I can get repops for that year and model so I may have to get some made to put it right.  It's just sad, it was in really good shape to begin with.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

I have 2 bikes in good shape with spraybomb black over original paint/decals. Anyone find a solution to saving what's underneath?

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

tried using gasoline, as another member did, but it barely took any spraybomb off, even with lots of elbow grease. mad Anyone have any other ideas? I'm trying to save the original paint underneath.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

If you will get some wet papertowels and wallpaper your bike with them and let it sit awhile,it will come wipe right off. You can spritz wallpapered bike with spray bottle to keep damp. Gentle and effective especially on cheap paint thieves Usually use.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

I stripped silver spraybomb off of my GT Vertigo with the black and green splatter paint. See my bike and see what you think of how it turned out. I used laquer thinner dabbed onto a rag. Never pour it directly on the frame. Be patient and use q-tips on the welds and hard to reach places.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

Acetone works well on spray paint as well. I have also used "Graffiti Remover", not sure of the brand but I picked it up from Home Depot and it comes in a spray bottle. I have used that on OGK mags along with a nylon brush and have had decent results for a rider mag.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

Easy off oven cleaner..try on the bottom of the BB shell first to get your wipe off timing dialed..should leave the original paint alone.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

I"ve done alot of work with acetone so I'll reccomend it.  Pour some in a bowl & dilute with water & wipe with a rag.  Add acetone to to water to make it as strong as you need it.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

Thank you for posting this thread. I have a '96 Haro Group 1 that has been spray bombed, I want to re-do it but didn't know how to get the paint off.

I am now thinking that citrus cleaner is what I'll do, I like that it took the paint off down to bare metal.

Re: Removing Spraybombed Paint?

Klean safe brand stripper ...works amazing for removing junk paint. i used it on a Hutchison stem and only took like 4 min to complete. I've also tried it on old powder coated lesters...its taking off the junk purple but leaving the red powder. id be careful with this stuff onyour frame if u want to save the paint. i also tried this stuff on a gt chainwheel..original white bombed black..it took off the black and white
