GT pro series XL PLUS questions
Anyone familiar with this model? There is one for sale locally that looks to be a 99 or 2000 model. I know it doesn't have any real value as a collectors piece, I was wondering if it makes a good racer/rider. Does anyone own one of these? whats the top tube length? How do they ride? is the geometry comparible to what 20inch racers use these days? Thanks for any info, going to look at it this afternoon.

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
I had one for a bit. I picked it up used for a fair price and used the components to build up another frame. It had a 21" top tube and rode pretty decent the few times I rode it. I think it would make a great track/trails rig.
In dog beers I've only had one.
Lighten up. It's only the internet.

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
I own 3 of them now (1 posted and 2 more I'm working on), they ride pretty nice. Theyre the last of the USA built GT cromo race bikes, and the XL Plus has a 21 1/4" TT. I sorta came into deals on them, and even though collectors ignore them, theyre decent race frames
too much damn drama over bikes.................

Don't let that "built in usa" sticker fool you, they were actually "made" in Taiwan ![]()
Their geometry is on par with todays race bikes.
Can't go wrong with a full chromoly gt ![]()

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
They came with the super cool Rhythm System wheelset and Stiletto forks. If the one you're looking at is stock, those parts are a bonus. BTW, +1 on the Taiwanese build.

are they really made in Taiwan? How do they get away with a sticker that says " built in USA" ![]()

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
"Built in USA" can simply mean that the bike was assembled in the USA, but welded in Taiwan. It's my understanding that such was the case with the low end mid school bikes owned by GT (GT, Powerlite, Robinson, Dyno). Not the case with Auburn, though, as all of them were welded in the USA. However, some metals even for the high end "USA-made" models may have been sourced from overseas. If anyone knows otherwise, please correct me if I'm wrong. ![]()

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
Just replaced my Robinson with one and I love it. Handles great on the track.

And while at the track, you'll here quite a few guys say "I wish my bike was chrome" ![]()

These were the last of the steel gt race bikes and the xl plus a great model. Seen black and I think green or blue? But never chrome either. Nice bike.

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
The chrome on mine is pretty resilient. I picked my frame up here on the museum for an awesome price. Rust looked pretty bad in spots but after some barkeepers friend, you'd never know it was there. It's an awesome bike that's easy to ride. Very responsive.

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
I've got two 2000 XL's and love the way they ride, thinking about trying my hand at racing soon and those will be my rides. If I try cruiser class I've got their 24" big brother as well. All three of them are chrome.

Re: GT pro series XL PLUS questions
I raced from 1985-90 and then got the "bmx bug" when I was 22 (1998) and raced through 2000..... Yep looks like Im getting that bug again seeing how I just built a K2 Maintime like I used to have.... Picked up the GT at a good price of $20 for the frame and found the stiletto for $25, Nice price huh? lol Still in search of the Reynolds super model to build like I used to have.... Ive never owned a GT other than this frame/fork so Im going to build it and see how it goes...
