1978 SE Racing BD-III
1978 SE Racing BD-III
Rare version of the Mini Ripper before it became known as the "Mini Ripper"
Scot Breithaupt designed the alloy FMF Jr. Pro for Greg Hill in 1977. Scot started SE racing and the new name was the GH Flyer which was in a SE ad but no picture. Greg left to join Team Schwinn so the name became BDIII, Breithaupt Development III.
This and the JU-6 were advertised together featuring non-oval top tubes. SE did not have forks yet so they were spec'd with Cook Bros. forks in the ad. Scot soon had Cycle Pro forks spec'd with SE's until the Landing Gear fork was finalized in 1979. With further testing the frames were adjusted to have oval top tubes to prevent breaking.
This was a hit with the smaller racers and talk about SE's gnarly color combo with shades of blue and brown which have been so unique and never duplicated.
1979 Derek Brown from Colorado joined SE and was the new little factory hot shoe. The frame was renamed to the DBIV.
Once Derek left SE the final name became the Mini Ripper.
Scot was reunited with the BDIII at the 2011 BMX Society event in Bellflower California and here's a video from that day.
SCOT BREITHAUPT and the BDIII
Scot had some great products and "The Ripper's" are still around today! Innovation, quality, and so stylish...thanks Scot!!!
