1978 Madison MX20
1978 Madison MX20
Australian Built BMX Bike
I got one of these bikes when I was about 9. The one I had was a silvery blue, and after only about 12 months my brother and I both cracked the frames on the top tube just behind the center gusset. We sent them back to the factory for a repair as they had a life time warranty on the frame. As you can see by one of the photos the factory did the dodgyest repairs. They just cut the gusset along the top tube and head tube but left it in there welded along the bottom tube. Then they placed two 'mongoose' style gussets on the out side. I was pritty happy to find this bike that had the same repair as my bike from the '70s. I plan to do it up as new at some stage. Hope you like it......

Very cool to see an old Madison with the mongoose style gusset repair. I had one in the late 70's but unfortunately it was stolen before I had the chance to crack it.

You got it Beer
This is not a repair as the factory used the front triangles of the 78 model and stitched a different rear end and added 2 new head gussets.
It was a cheap and nasty way of getting rid of way too many 78 frames and sold them in 79.
I test rode one in early 79.
Your frame may have been repaired this way but this is a standard model and there are still left over frame parts rusting in long grass in Aus.

Re: 1978 Madison MX20
you guys are all over it. the seat stay is def not like the one i had as a kid. I can't understand how they could send this bike out like that with the front gusset change. I remember my brother and i were so Pissed about the repair that they did to our bikes. thanks for the info but its good to here that stuff:)
