How can you tell if a Hutch donut clamp is real?
I have a unstamped donut. Are there any specific measurements that would indicate that its a Hutch?

"Anything" can be made ! If somebody had the equipment , and wanted to dedicate themselves in popping some part of there choice , if they do it well enough , it could pass , maybee not to you , but to someone . Hutch seatclamps unfortunately are pretty simple in there shape , I dont know much , but Im guessing it would be one of the easier clamps to copy !
I do know one thing though mines real , er ,a , I think it is , how do tell the difference ?

They made copy clamps back in the 80`s.
One way to be sure its real is if the chrome is peeling and it looks terrible. Hutch chrome was the worst and often started peeling within a week of being new. Crusty and peeling = real.

my point, exactly!
to some folks here this is great news as they can pretend to own something they do not. to others, it cheapens the experience and "ruins" the hobby. ![]()
same thing with the phony new hutch stems that can be made to pass as og with a simple rechrome. experts will know but newbies will bite and be ripped off! sad, really!

I got mine from Heath McCaffey , so I'm pretty sure he was telling me the truth ! I mean he gave me the whole story , about how it was Eddie Fiola's when he rode for Hutch , and how it was used on Mike Miranda's bike in the movie RAD ! He's a real nice guy , I even donated an extra $100 to his feed the hungry Koala bears in Australia fundraiser !

I'm in the same boat. My black one has been sitting in a box of old bike parts that I've had for years. I finally am getting to use it and am curious if it is legit ot not. I don't really care if it is or isn't but I'm damn curious is all.

Re: How can you tell if a Hutch donut clamp is real?
you have to get one real and one fake and compare the threads in the aluminum, the real hutch has a more beefy looking thread,a little more aluminum there than the fake, and maybe a few more threads.I had one of each and that is the only way yo can tell on the 1st gen clamps.
