Re: How to Pack & Ship BMX Stuff

I just wanted to share this with everyone. I shipped a bike today stopping at a local Ups store first. I packaged the bike myself mind you. Ups wanted $187 to ship the bike from MA to Austin TX. I had another package being sent to the same buyer to. I asked him to double check to make sure the dimensions he entered were correct, and they were. I thought that I'd have to get creative and repackage to lessen the overall package size.
I then went directly to a local FedEx drop off location and granted, I setup an account with them. They charged me $87 bucks for both packages. That also included insurance and delivery signature for both packages.

I think I'll use FedEx going forward, super friendly people at the counter and reasonable pricing to boot.

What I'd give for a early 80's 26" GT Cruiser....

Yup. I found FedEx was always much cheaper when sending larger/odd shaped items

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy. smile

When did this start? I just shipped parcel the other day and was charged tracking for $0.90...Is this just on priority and label printed online?

Thanks for the heads up

I just got a set of wheels packed like this (as instructed above) and the once perfect red anodized hub was all scratched up. When shipping wheels, I pad the hubs and axles then wrap each wheel with cardboard before putting them in the shipping box. In my opinion, you don"t ever want metal touching metal, especially if they are brand new or nos rims.

Re: How to Pack & Ship BMX Stuff

This thread is invaluable.  I never would have thought of pipe insulation and cable ties as packing material.  This is a very professional looking and inexpensive method to pack and ship bmx parts.

Overseas almost always gotta use USPS.

Re: How to Pack & Ship BMX Stuff

This is how I pack...I  leave the BB cup and the headset cup on but if its aluminum cups I would remove it and get a donor metal BB and headset cups to protect the headtube and BB

I also use one of those plastic dropout saver . This is just the first stage and when it gets packed in the box I will use a thin styrofoam on the top and bottom of the box and will be packed tight so theres no movement on any of the parts
another thing is I always take the hubs axle off , this is a whole bike and some parts are packed in the same manner ( pipe insulation ang stretch wrap)

Re: How to Pack & Ship BMX Stuff

If you are looking for a box to ship wheels, check your local tire shop and ask if they have a box from a set of wheels.  They work great.

Or go to your local Bowling Pro Shop and ask if they have any 4 ball boxes. 18x19x7-8  big_smile

Re: How to Pack & Ship BMX Stuff

The only small tip I can add is I severely over tape. The reason I do is because I get good quality tape from the dollar store. It works great and $5 lasts a loooooooong time!
