Re: 1957 J.C Higgins Cal Cruiser Twenty-Sixer 26
brazing is strong? it looks weak, and ive had3-4 different 26ers from 30s-50s all cracked on some part of the mast at a brazing point.
why did brazing ever go away?

Re: 1957 J.C Higgins Cal Cruiser Twenty-Sixer 26
well it depends on who made em. monarks are notorious for seperating/cracking at the seat tube at the BB shell and seat mast. and ive owned lots of brazed frames, never a problem. maybe you got all the defective ones?
brazing went away eventually because it was a hand done job and the finishing(filing/sanding) was done by hand. its a mix of welded/brazed frames out there. some used brazing here and there on the frame(brake bridge, kickstand mount etc.) but solid brazing on a frame went away with welding and lugged frames.
and schwinn filleted frames are a whole nother ball of wax. they used stamped parts, like the headtube, bb shell, and dropouts. they start as a flat piece of steel, and through a series of stamps and rollers, they form into headtubes, bb shells, dropouts, and the chainstays.they are flash-welded ("electro-forged") together. thats why if you look inside a schwinn frame where the two pieces meet theres a lot of slag and extra metal from the forging and flash welding process. even the main tubes are electro-forged onto the pre-stamped peices. flash welding is where they put the two pieces together and run an excessive amount of electric current through them and heats them to near melting as they are pressed together, forming a strong bond.
