1979 LRV Moxie The Gutsy One Monoshock

LRV Moxie Monoshock project. Just about done with restoration.

I bought this LRV Moxie Monoshock from a former racer who'd decided he needed space more than this project. At first I thought it was a Matthews, but learned that I was misinformed. It has an Ashtabula stem and flatbar fork. It also has a motomag rear wheel w/coaster brake. The front wheel is a TUFF WHEEL.  The pedals are trashed, but I aired up the tires and bounced (rolled) around the neighborhood.

Re: 1979 LRV Moxie The Gutsy One Monoshock

the front wheel is a Tuff Wheel I. pull the tire off and see what the date code is on it. the front end isn't stock but it is era correct. i'd just put a Tuff on the back and clean it up.

Re: 1979 LRV Moxie The Gutsy One Monoshock

Just fyi.

This bike is probably a late 76 or early 77 LRV.  The looptail with those dropouts indicate LRV vs the earlier style when they were marketed as Matthews (with the reverse dropouts).

The later bikes had this setup with the Ashtabula stem and fork.  They had stopped using the girder fork and used either an Ashtabula or an LRV similar to the curved Tange TX-500.

Note the setup on the monoshock in the rear of the picture:

Re: 1979 LRV Moxie The Gutsy One Monoshock

Thought this June 77 shows a Matthews looptail but looking at the ad again the M logo on the front is not for Matthews but for Moxie. Shock version came in Red, Blue, Yellow and Orange "just to mention a few" but gives no indication of the other colors. But Im sure one was black. The logo for the ad at the bottom of the page is for LRV Moxie.

The bikes both hardtail and monshock if equipped with MX-60 wheels was the MX60 model. Not sure if any of the other parts were different from the spoked versions

Re: 1979 LRV Moxie The Gutsy One Monoshock

It seems they used the Matthews headtube decals for a long time after all of the ads dropped the Matthews logos.  I've come to believe that very few of the monoshocks had the blue LRV headtube decals.

I have seen several survivor monoshock bikes that were black and a couple of chrome ones as well.
