Re: Whatever Became of Jeff Watson ? Early 80s Skatepark Guy ....

I've searched high and low for Jeff. No where to be found. I was told he committed suicide. I still don't know if thats right.
I built this as a tribute a while back.
His first ride, Mongoose. later on he rode a Proline. He is the reason I have a Mongoose with Bottema forks and rode parks in 81-83.
How many pics do you want? lol

Re: Whatever Became of Jeff Watson ? Early 80s Skatepark Guy ....

Watson is the only I guy I know who re-entered with the rear wheel .... He was an original, that's for sure. I rank up with Tinker and the 1-2 guys who invested Bowel / Skatepark Riding. He was catching Air before Fiola ... I think ?

Re: Whatever Became of Jeff Watson ? Early 80s Skatepark Guy ....

Jeff Watson took a lot of physical abuse back then ... He rode hard and landed hard. He was not a smooth, fluid guy like Fiola ... Guys like Watson, Hoffman, etc abused their bodies.

Matt Hoffman landed harder than anyone I ever saw.

The image off Jeff going over-vert in the pipe is one of my all time favorite pics, ever!

I was told by a message on Youtube before that clip. I don't think they are the same person. There is another Jeff Watson in BMX too. It's not him either.

Yeah, I remember that message or at least seeing it on youtube in the message area. I always thought that Night Ranger`s J.W. was one and the same as the BMXer. I dunno, very cornfusing tongue

Re: Whatever Became of Jeff Watson ? Early 80s Skatepark Guy ....

This is amazing and the tribute bike is fantastic. Jeff was a high school buddy of mine and I used to watch him tear it up at Rancho Mediterrania skate park back then with my other skate pals Steve and Curtis.  Jeff was ahead of his time. I just recently found out through a mutual friend that he is gone now so thank you for keeping his memory alive with your postings and tributes.

Hi Scott.
jeff was the guy that inspired me to ride the skateparks. I had pics everywhere of him. He deserved better recognition and was an amazing talent.

Thanks for the reply, and you were also right on the NightRanger Jeff Watson, they are not the same person.  BTW everytime I saw Jeff ride he brought a boom box style radio and blasted Jimmy Hendrix so when I see those images I can hear his music blasting in the background.

That sucks he is no longer with us, what a  pioneer. This had to be the VERY beginning. Even before Haro nonetheless. Talk about some balls, to crank at those giant concrete walls and pull up and hope you landed it.  No videos or Internet to learn the do and donts.

Re: Whatever Became of Jeff Watson ? Early 80s Skatepark Guy ....

Looks like he rides goofy foot  and then switches to regular depending on what he is doing.  I switched from goofy  to regular  back in the late 80's  and it opened up alot of doors for tricks.   He was definetly ahead of his time  RIP.....I wouldve liked to see him get honored at these Old School events
