Re: 1993 Diamond Back Turbo restoration progress

I made a little progress over the weekend but hit some small roadblocks and had to change my approach (which I like better).

After the decals were applied and had time to completely dry I went back to address the white decal paper showing around the edges.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_055.jpg

I used a Sharpie permanent marker to blacken any of the white showing through where I didn't want it.  I use this sparingly because the black isn't always an exact match but it looks a lot better than the white.  You've usually got to be within a couple feet examining very closely before you can spot the Sharpie repair.  Sharpies also work well for fixing small nicks and scratches of anything black on a bike.

Here is the same area after the touch up and clear has been applied.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_066.jpg

As I was fixing the decals I proceeded to damage one I didn't realize was laying against a towel and rubbing.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_056.jpg

I lifted the corner up using an exacto and it peeled away cleanly then reapplied one of the backups I had printed.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_057.jpg

I went outside and hit the frame and fork heavily with Rustoleum Clear Lacquer.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_058.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_059.jpg

On past builds I've sprayed the clear until it was heavy enough to reflect a smooth glossy finish but not enough to run.  This is a simple technique that only takes a bike or two to master.  On this bike, however, I was fighting some windy conditions and cooler temps which caused some areas to gloss up nicely but catch overspray right next to it.  In the photo above you can see a nice glossy smooth area above the word speed but the overspray on the brace tube where it says Lamborghini.

Here is how the frame looked after several coats of clear gloss were applied.  It was just okay (and I have some pretty liberal standards).

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_062.jpg

There were enough bad areas that bothered me that I decided to try another approach I had been considering from the start.  A matte finish.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_064.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_065.jpg

Now this I'm happy with.  In fact, I'm glad I was pushed in this direction because there are several other parts that will be black and can now get the same matching finish.  Here's the whole frame.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_063.jpg

I'll describe these next two pics later.  For now I'll just leave them to your imagination... big_smile

It was actually about 60 degrees out when I was painting.  The snow is just in the background melting.  As you can see, my thread on how to do a simple glossy paint job with very little extra work went out the window.  The orange peel texture usually gets covered with enough thick clear lacquer that it completely disappears.  Maybe I'll try again on my next bike... hmm

Re: 1993 Diamond Back Turbo restoration progress

Yeah , LED lights would be cool and a policesiren from a toy-policecar. Maybe you can place it in the seatpost with a little switch on the seatrail.
When you on the way with the bike and you need to lock it, than you can use some handcuffs. cool

I dont know how it is in america, but in my country we have some policeofficers, who are driving with a bike through the city.
When the bike is finished you should present it by the policestation, maybe you fill a gap in the market and you can build them up some
fast cruiser-bikes.

The matte finish looks really cool but HOW did you dull the gloss?

Oh, and blinking lights under clear grips would be sweet!

Are you gonna put strobes in the bars? lol Cool cool I like the matte finish better than the gloss for some reason.

I wished I would`ve had you throw in a couple of those lamborghini script decals with the badges. I didn`t even see `em til juts now. How in the world did I miss those? lol

I just sprayed matte clear over the whole thing.  I could make it glossy again by switching back to clear lacquer too if I didn't like the matte...

Re: 1993 Diamond Back Turbo restoration progress

Hi Wired, I always admire your work, this is an interesting project, after seeing your other restorations I have a question: what kind of product do you use to create clear stickers? for example the ones in the Royce Union, Diamond Jocker, etc.

I am asking this because I'm going to restore a S&M Dirtbike with custom stickers, the bike will be kind of purple/violet with black and chrome parts I will post a topic of the restoration just after my frame arrives from the powdercoater...

Thanks Childude!  For clear stickers I use inkjet waterproof vinyl from http://www.papilio.com.

Re: 1993 Diamond Back Turbo restoration progress

Thanks for all the props so far.  Those of you who guessed that the holes were in the handle bars were right.  oldschuulbmxer, Oldschooldude72 and townslo nailed the reason why.  big_smile

I worked on the bars some more last night and finished them up early this morning.  I added a decal to the crossbar then clear coated them and let them dry all night.  I covered the holes at the ends with paper so I could vacuum a pull string through for the wiring.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_068.jpg

This part took some creative fishing but I got all the wires pulled through and soldered up.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_069.jpg

The first step was to get all the wires pulled through the holes.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_070.jpg

Then I started pressing them in place one by one.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_071.jpg

I kept testing all the way through to make sure they were still lighting up.  I only had to redo one from pulling a wire loose at the bulb end.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_072.jpg http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_074.gif

They pretty much turned out as I envisioned.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l258/GHS_Wired/BMX_Museum_2011/83DBTurbo_073.jpg

As I was working on my decals my oldest son became inspired to make his own Lambo police car.  He found this for $3 at Wal mart.  I shrunk some decals down for him but he did all the masking and spray painting.  He even found a light bar from another car and cannibalized it.  I am so proud of him.  big_smile  Mini-Me... lol
