How to Install 3pc GT Power Series Cranks w/ Power Disc & Chain-ring

So being a "Resident GT Guy" here on the site, I have been asked this Question Countless times... I keep responding in PM's and Have never made a Thread which I know will solve all my problems of having to repeat the same answers about the same things over and over... I don't mind helping at all... and it's not a complaint... I am just saying I have been making my own life harder than it needs to be by not doing more threads like this a long time ago...

I have already made a Thread on Building superlaces. I am working on this one. And I will be doing one on Epoch Headsets with the in's and outs and why the race one is different and why you sometimes get the gap after its installed... and How to restore Tech'7 levers properly and where to get replacement parts for them etc... And A Couple others that are always issues with GT Pro Freestyle Tours and Pro Series Race Bikes from 87-89...

Ok So lets get started with this one... Its really Very Simple but I can see where it can be a confusing origami Puzzle to someone who has never don this before and has a complete set of these cranks laying in pieces in front of them...

I have several set of these and for this illustration I am using an extra set I have with the Plastic Cups to make it easy on myself. You are better off using the stainless cups if you have them as the plastic cups flex and degrade over time. But if you are just going to be looking at the bike and not riding it allot it really does not matter. Ignore the Condition of the bearings/Hardware etc. here, as these are (again) an extra set I have not restored for use yet... I removed the Restored Set from this frame to make this illustration for you. You're welcome... tongue

We are going to go from this...

Re: How to Install 3pc GT Power Series Cranks w/ Power Disc & Chain-ring

The First this we are going to do is install the bearings and cups... If you do not have a bearing press you can pound them in with a hammer. But I suggest going down to Home Depot or Lowes and buying a 12 inch long open ended carriage bolt, some over sized washers, and some nuts for each end... The hammer method is fine I guess but just not practical. If you use a hammer be sure to cover the cup with a cloth and or use something else like a piece of wood so you do not have to hit the cup directly and ruin it with hammer marks.

Remember GREASE IS YOUR FRIEND!!! Before you put the cups in you want to rub a light coat of grease in the inside of the bottom bracket area. This will help stop rust and make life easier on you if you need to take it apart again in the future... Notice I just used my finger to rub a light amount around the inside...

Before and After...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4676.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4677.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4678.jpg

Then you are going to repeat the same process with the cups and bearings in the cups... Light grease to keep them from rusting or getting stuck etc... Install the bearings next... Repeat the process on the other side... It does not matter which cup is on which side... When it comes to that they are the same...
A good rule of thumb to follow is if it's metal to metal... Grease it!!!

Re: How to Install 3pc GT Power Series Cranks w/ Power Disc & Chain-ring

Next we are going to install the Spindle... The Spindle has a drive side and a NON drive side... The Drive side is bigger around on the threaded area than the NON drive side. The NON Drive side also has a groove in it for the washer to fit into. The Drive side in case you do not understand, is the side the crank disc and chain-ring goes on.

This is the Drive side of the Spindle with the bearing race already installed on it. The bearing race on the drive side has a spacer built into it for the Disc to sit on/around. Notice the Other threaded race does not have a spacer on it. You cannot confuse the two of these because As I mentioned before, the threads/diameters are different sizes. I did not remove the one on this spindle because it is stuck on!!! See Why Grease is your friend!!! Someone did not grease this thing 20 years ago and its on there for good it seems.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4684.jpg

Note how the Drive side race has the spacer for the Power Disc... It sits flush over/around it...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4685.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4686.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4687.jpg

The Spindle Now Goes into the Bottom Bracket with the Drive Side on the Right... Like this... Don't forget what??? To grease it...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4688.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4689.jpg

Then you need to thread on the Bearing race on the other side... Remember to apply light grease... tongue
Thread it till its Flush and tight. When I say tight it is relative... You want it tight enough to make sure there is no side to side play in the spindle at all. But not so tight that it squeezes the bearings together stopping them from spinning freely... All you want to eliminate is any side to side motion of the spindle.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4690.jpg
Notice the side of the spindle with the Slot is on the Left side of the Bike!!!
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4691.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4692.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4693.jpg

Next you install the washer and the Nut to lock the race in place. This keeps the bearing race at the tightness I mentioned before. Just tight enough to stop side to side motion but not so tight is effects the bearings job of spinning. First the washer goes on (lining it up with the groove in the spindle) and then the Nut...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4694.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4695.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4696.jpg

Re: How to Install 3pc GT Power Series Cranks w/ Power Disc & Chain-ring

So Now let's Install the Right Side "Drive arm" and the Disc and Chain-wheel... The Drive arm has a bolt in it that drives the Power disc... There is no need to remove or try to remove this bolt. You will more than likely strip it, break it or lose it. It was put in at the factory... Leave it there... Leave it alone!!!

This is what it looks like...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4683.jpg

First take the Disc and put it on the spindle like this... Making sure to get the Disc mounted properly on the Spacer for the disc. If it is off,... the disc will wobble out of round when you put the chain on later.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4698.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4699.jpg

Then Put on the drive side crank arm... And secure it with the first of the Set screws (spindle Bolts)... You need to (again) be sure that the Disc is sitting flush when you tighten the set-bolt (Spindle Bolt) down... And to Line up the Drive pin with the hole in the Power Disc...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4702.jpg
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4705.jpg
Make sure the Disc Is Flush!!!
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4707.jpg

Repeat the Process on the Other side with the NON Drive Crank Arm... Do I need to tell you how to position the arm??? Naaahhh I don't... If I do... you need to quit now and send your crank-set to me... tongue

Re: How to Install 3pc GT Power Series Cranks w/ Power Disc & Chain-ring

The Last thing you will do it tighten the Pinch Bolts... You need to alternate tightening each one a little at a time so they are both tightened evenly. First one and then the other. I am using the GT wrench for speed but you will need to use a #6 Metric Allen Wrench to do the Tightening. I use it to get it all tight so I do not take a chance of breaking the 25 year old Plastic GT tool... Hard o find and worth some dough... wink

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4712.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4713.jpghttp://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii50/Rividude/Power%20Series%20Cranks/GEDC4715.jpg

You are done!!! Be proud of yourself... Take your time and do it right...

Re: How to Install 3pc GT Power Series Cranks w/ Power Disc & Chain-ring

Nice work Christian.
I don't know how many tons of times I've had to tell people that there's no need to remove the sprocket/drive pin.  Even though it has an Allen head - doesn't mean you have to go messing with it.   Seen so many stripped out for no reason.

Glad to see you pics show the sprocket on the spindle first - then the arm - without having to bolt the sprocket to the arm.

smile

Thanks Matt... Glad A fellow GT Nerd like you approves of my Technique... Consider me Honored... tongue
There are other ways but this Is what I found the easiest and practical...
And you are right about that pin... When Ever I see one removed I wonder WHY and HOW since they are so tight... roll

You need to make buddies with some members on the site and ask around for some... If you were a Pro member you could make a WTB post... But For Now I would throw it in your SIG line like everyone else does and see if someone contacts you about it. I have a couple extra sets but I am holding onto them or I would hook you up... But you are better off using the WTB forum... I get what I need there within reason 75% of the time... Cups should be easy... wink

I will work on it soon... I don't have an extra epoch laying around right now so I will need to borrow one or take a bike apart first...

Your cranks are going to mount the same way pretty much. You will just need the spacer (I pm'd you) for the disc to fit, And you will need shims as well if the chain is not lined up with the sprocket...
