1981 GJS A Frame
1981 GJS A Frame
GJS A FRAME
GJS was the first to use the extra tubing instead of a gusset.
GJS stands for George, Jeff & Scott Utterback. Jeff Utterback is an "Old School" Pro who also raced for SE Racing and was responsible for designing the PK Ripper frame which was originally known as the JU-6.
That takes care of the "J" in GJS now for the "G" and "S"...
The "G" represents George Utterback who was Jeff's father and the "S" belongs to Scott which would be Jeff's brother.
The GJS "A" Frame was a favorite for many top PRO and expert riders. Along with the SE Quadangle, the GJS broke from tradition with a long front section and low bottom-bracket. the "A" Frame design gave the GJS an agressive, moto-exotica look.
This is a very Rare Frame indeed.
Will be selling soon on ebay australia!

Re: 1981 GJS A Frame
This frame owned by me now and waiting for the attention it deserves. Im going to do some research into a definate year first. Anyone know if the serial# includes a date/year. Also seems to be some differences in the gusset tubes which may help date them.

Re: 1981 GJS A Frame
On the 1983 model which I have the serial # is #3009. The 3 indicates the year and the 009 indicated the ninth one made.
Check the museum and ask other owners about theirs.

Re: 1981 GJS A Frame
Thanks Rob E. I guessed the first number would be the year. On mine the number is 17 and washer marks cover any others after that, if any. Ive always guessed it was an '81 due to that and it was only yesterday that I noticed the previous owner had posted it as a '79. Wasnt really worried about the frame # but wanted to know the year.
Thanks again!

Re: 1981 GJS A Frame
If the two gussett tubes are both the same size, then it is a 77-79. If the angled gussett tube is thinner, then it is later.
The A frames started with the two tubes being the same size, then they eliminated the diaganal tube and just had the bottom tube. The next design was the big plate gussett, then they went back to the A frame with two tubes but the diagonal tube was smaller diameter. The last year for GJS was the BIG TUBE frame. This all happened between 1977 and 1985.

Re: 1981 GJS A Frame
I see now that the diagonal tube on yours is small diameter. That makes it 83-84ish, not, 79.

Thanks Brian. I've re-examined the other frames in the museum and come to the conclusion that some have the wrong year listed. There is a slight difference between some of the frames with two different sized gusset tubes. The smaller tube hits the down tube further up(above where the head tube to down tube one hits. Considering this mine matches one listed as a '78 and another listed as an '81( this frame serial# starts with a 1). Not sure now as my serial# starts with 17.
