Pipeline 1986
I found a couple more old school pics from 1986. Anyone here know Dean "Retread" ? (never knew his last name) from Southern CA? He used to shred the full pipe almost as high as the pros.
Edit: just heard from Jeff Carrol who also rode the Pipeline. Dean "Retread" McLanahan... Sure would like to ride with you again some day... ![]()

Here's one of Blyther at a lower altitude. I think he was just learning lookdowns. Keep in mind that this bowl was 12 ft deep with 3 ft of pure vert. The fence is 5 ft high which puts his head about 17ft above the bottom.

Re: Pipeline 1986
Okay, here are a few more. I'm going through all the negatives I have and scanning them at high res. I'll keep trickling stuff in as I get it done.
Simply a classic of Eddie about 7-8 feet out of the pipe bowl.
From behind the fence looking into the pipe and bowl. The biker on the far left with his head turned around is one of my friends, Gabe Rogers. I lost track of him over the years but he was the guy who took me to Mike Dominguez's house to ride his backyard ramp several times. The helmet to the left of Eddie is Dean/Retread, obviously Eddie airing, and on the right is Danny Hubbard.
Hubbard, Retread & Fiola.
Eddie again at about 7-8 feet out. The Honda CRX in the parking lot was Eddie's right-hand drive car. The license plate said "RIGHT" (but CA DMV messed up). He told us it was supposed to say "1 RIGHT" as in his one right-hand drive car. His Toyota 4x4 license said "1 LEFT". This only would have ever made sense to see them parked side by side. The guy behind the fence was another biker, but I only knew his nickname, Slim. ![]()

What a great bunch of old pics . This might get a few sneers but I'd give anything to skate the Pipeline , especially since I started skating in 86' . ![]()

If you're a skater you kind of still can. The full pipe and pipe bowl has been loosely recreated at Upland Memorial Park just a few miles from where the original Pipeline skatepark was located. Go to Google Maps and paste these coordinates: 34.103423,-117.634274 then turn on satellite view to see this.
I stopped by there a few years ago while visiting CA and it's pretty cool to see it again. No bikers allowed, though (BOOOOOO!). I've found shots of Blyther riding it. Most likely because he has a badge... ![]()

YO!
Killer photos Wired.
I grew up in Pomona and spent some time there as well.
Is Dean the same guy who had that yellow PK? He kind of looks like him.
I used to ride a chrome ‘85 Mach one with Pro Performer forks and bars BITD.
I’ve been to the new Upland Pipe, but your right no bikes! The Badland skaters protect that place too and beef with bikers when they show up.
My brother Flovalflown and I took a trip out to the original site this summer. The pools and track are now covered by warehouses. The only original building is the skate shop. It’s still there empty with old stickers on the doors.

Yep, that's the guy. He's one of the reasons I built another PK for the skatepark (see my bikes). I loved his yellow one! I went back to the original location too and actually saw and talked with Mr. [Don] Hoffman. I couldn't believe he was cruising the parking lot when I pulled in. He owns those warehouses now. Probably makes more money than he did from us at $1.50 an hour! ![]()

Re: Pipeline 1986
Did a few more (I'm staying up way too late doing this!
)
Eddie dive-bombing.
Hubbard cheering on Fiola.
Retread yelling some supportive comment to Rob Artigo.
Artigo through the fence.
The pic I used to make my avatar.

Totally. To see these photos is like a gift - I've looked at and memorized every magazine photo I've ever come across, so seeing new stuff is awesome.

Love the photos! I was there in Sept/Oct '85 and visited the park a few times as well as catching the KOS final. I'll never forget it. Still have my pipeline membership card.

Nice! Do you know who the riders are? I'm guessing Blyther is the first with the red number plate and possibly Fiola in the yellow shirt.
