1985 Mongoose Californian

REG-GIE!! REG-GIE!!

1985 Mongoose Californian. After much research in the forums, I can say that now. I'm going to try to keep this one as original as I can. This should be good news to the "purists" that saw my 87 Performer and cringed. HAHA. Restoring bikes has become so addictive that the owner of the local bike shop offered me a job because I was in there all of the time. Two words: EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT!

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

Dude, I'm from Biloxi........Is there a local bike shop in the city that deals with old school bmx or even knows anything about it? I found what you said interesting about additive behavoir toBMX....I get it...I am 36 and have built four bikes in the last two months. Late 70's early 80's mongoose / supergoose...I decided to check into only after seeing my bike i had as a kid growing up...2nd year Monggose California, i guess that would be an 84, in the attic in my mothers house ...Al this after cleaning up after huricane.

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

mcater, I know it sounds a little biased but the owner of the shop I work at (Westbank Cyclery) knows damn near everything you could want to know. The only bad thing is no old school parts. There just isn't that much of a demand for it in the area. But the reason I always went to that shop was that he knew what the heck I was talking about. Most of the "kids" at the other shops probably never owned a BMX bike with a 1" threaded fork. And the older guys were just a bunch of road geeks trying to sell you a $2000 road bike so they could pay the rent. Or even worse . . . a hybrid. BLEEECCCHHHHH. Sorry, I just threw up a little.
You should try to restore the '84 Cali if you haven't already. Restoring is addictive. A passion. If it wasn't, this site wouldn't be here.
Sorry about your mom's house. I sort of know how that feels. My aunt and uncle HAD a house in Waveland two miles from the beach. It used to be my grandparent's house. Spent many a summer there.

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

I am nothing short of amazed about the Old School BMX craze. Now I bought my first new bike and it was an 84 Mongoose Expert. The Cali was a totally different bike. Heck I just came across my receipt and Goose catalogue I got from the bike shop. Cali all 4130 including forks. Expert not all 4130. Steel back hoops and forks. Both has same bars, wheels etc but the necks were different. SR std on cali and some kind of generic 4 bolt on the expert. I will write more later must read!!

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

Comay boy you hit the nail on the head with the new craze of bike shop workers. The shop by me has loads of knowledge but someone came in a few years back and cleaned them out of most of the old school stuff. Both of the owners ( they are brothers ) used to race at the track here. They actually gave me one of the old plates off the wall of the shop for one of my builds. Cool guys.

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

Thanks for the info AZGOOSE. The seat tube decal was removed on my frame so I don't know exactly what it is. Is there any way to tell by the serial #? It has a "generic" stem on it so I can assume that it's an Expert. Anymore info that you could pass on will be greatly appreciated.

djdane, my statement about shop workers is sad but true. The old school shops and shop guys appear to be a dying breed. I was out riding one day and my cranks started creaking. I stopped in a shop and asked if I could borrow an allen wrench. The guy told me he'd have to write a repair order and charge me! Charge me? To do it myself? _____________! <---- insert explative(s) here. That particual shop is out of business now. Gee, I wonder why?

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

Hey I cannot tell you an acurate way of telling 4130 from the steel. Anyone help?? Brake levers are correct for both Cali and Expert. The Expert came with the generic plastic pedals that were colored like the pad set and tires were. The nice SR ones you have came on the Cali. Grips are correct for both models. Your chain ring and sprocket are Expert also. Expert came with a 2 piece unit but was not the pro class like the cali. Those are pro class 2 wheels right?? Expert came std. with those and the cali had the option of the pro class 3 wheels. Confused yet? I remember reading either BMX Plus or Action and they had the Expert reveiw like in 84. Thats how I found the Expert that I did buy. My neighbor bought the Cali and I could not afford it. 50 bucks more and that was alot of cash back then for me doing yard work! In that issue the centerfold was Eric Rupe riding his white Eric Rupe Signiture Edition Pro Class bike. I took it out of the mag and hung it on my wall till I moved out of my folks house. I still want that bike!!! Pro-class 3 wheels, white fram and fork. I wish I could remember exactly where it came from. During my marriage, (now divorced), my wife trashed that stuff! Hope I helped ya and help me also!! I want5 that white Rupe and I also need a set of chrome goose forks 4130 of course!-Mike

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

AZGOOSE, thanks for the info. I have a Pro Class disk and ring coming. I don't know if the wheels are 2's or 3's. After the magnet test, I have 2's. If I find out any info for you I'll be sure to pass it on.

skinnygmg, looks like an Expert

AZGOOSE, (or anyone else) how do you tell the difference between the pro class 2 and 3 wheels?  i didn't know there were different generations of these.

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

I found a Pro Class III in the shop that I work at (it's been sold). The only thing that I saw differnet was a "Pro Class III" sticker around the valve stem hole and a black anno finish.

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

Pro 1 wheels are steel with the holes like the others. Pro 2 wheels are alloy (aluminum) and both have the shiny finish. Pro 3 wheels are alloy also and I want to say graphite but I am unsure at ths time. They were supposed to be stronger and not any heaveir then the pro 2 wheels. The main difference is the color. Pro 3 wheels look black/grey. They also had hollow 4130 axles if my memory serves me correct. Man you guys are makin me think hard here!

Re: 1985 Mongoose Californian

I believe pro class 3 are hard annodized. thats why that blackish/gunmetal grayish color. Yeah if you take a magnet to them. If it sticks you got 1's, if they are silver and it don't yep it's 2's and if they are anno they are 3. Also the 1's are heavier.
