1984 Velamos

eighties bmx bike made in the czch republic

Found this old 80's bmx bike at an old bike shop. It was made in the czch republic and is in great shape. Pad set is leather with the old snaps. Coaster brake is huge and gleams like crazy. Tires are Barum MX. Rims have some neat design on them and the axle nuts are the old acorn type. yahoo

There were tons of these here in canada they were sold by Woolco department store in the 70s and 80's .

A nice looking bike , good frame to accessorize , but a very poor BMX to actually ride as a BMX , cheaply made .

Putting cotterpin cranks on any BMX is a really bad idea , as well the rims were very weak , stem as well ,

all parts made with cheaply cast low grade mild steel .

Another big problem with these ( i speak from experience ) is the rear coaster mechanism and hubs , DEFINETLY not shimano ..

A really good bike if you replace the stem , wheels and crankset , you have a blingin BMX !!

Just recieved a Velamos Bmx 20, which looked to be in good shape, had brakes instead of a coaster a sweet Hsiang seat and stock tyres that looked new tbh. Looked like it could be a fun project. The chainwheel (and crank as its cottered) where bent beyond repair and that stem is scary looking, that thing could be broken in half just by looking at it:

The only real problem is......

I have a plan involving a hydraulic press and some praying
wonder if i should replace the cranks ( main bb seems to be in good working order) or replace the whole BB instead?
what BB would fit this, its smaller than a euro as far as I can tell maybe just weld an american bb in there instead?

Just finished welding the BB today actually (well my brother did to be honest). Im sure the thing will ride fine, Ill have to get some photos up of the work in progress.

Tubes straightened out with minimum effort and its looks a hell of a lot better now, the BB was busted beyond repair tho , So I went ahead and chopped an American Bb out of a €4 bmx picked up a few months back by a friend. I figured its going to be either kept and I'll ride the hell out of it, or Ill pass it on to a friend.
Ill be keeping it mostly as it was, a new chainwheel is needed + Grips + Pedals and of course a fresh lick of paint as its been heated, hammered, and bent to death (or life ).

Im convinced that stem is a bad Idea, everything about it gives me the creeps, so Im using one I have lying around untill I find something better fitting, also thinking of throwing a 44t chainring on it as its got a 18t freewheel and Im not sure but isnt that very light gearing?

Made the sticker set last week and its ready for printing, although Im very very very tempted to CZ brand the bike instead, it is czechoslovakian after all

Tubes in white with CZ logos, brakes/grips etc in red and black pads with the CZ logo.

Ill try grab some pics tommorrow.

Looks good! These bikes were also very common in Finland. Every other kid had one in either metallic sparkle red or blue. The paint used to fade when stored long time outdoors so some of the red ones look almost metallic pink. The gears and cranks are crap, there is no other way to say it nicely. The stock cotterpin steel cranks are 135mm, totally unusable if you're any bigger than a five year old kid. The good thing is it has an Euro BB so you can upgrade at any time.

I am currently finishing up my red Velamos BMX-20 and i'm curious if some of you who own one of these, could let me know the serial number for reference to see if there is some consistency to it to help find out the manufacturing year. It should be located on the left side of the bottom bracket shell and should look like this: XXUX XXXXX
On the first batch of four there is a symbol that looks like letter "U". Then a batch of five numbers (atleast on mine).

The serial on the white one I finished (before I welded in the other BB) was 89U1 69501

I was confused with the serial too, if you find out how to date them please let me know
