1985 GHP Pro
1985 GHP Pro
I just spent the last few weeks updating this bike. I got new wheels and new paint. I was lucky and found a set of the chrome GHP pad set. Other than that it has the same parts on it that it did before, SR tubular 180 cranks,Haro sprocket, Tuffneck disk, Victor pedals, Robinson bars, A'me grips,DK stem, Dominator seat, GT seat post, Tuffneck seat post clamp,Diacompe 890. I found while stripping the bike the original color was white but the forks had a lot of red paint, not primer, on the the tube just below the threads. Not sure what that means. I left the picture of the bike prior to updating.
I got a fever....and the only perscription is more cowbell.

Re: 1985 GHP Pro
Honestly, I'm not sure what color it orginally was. He changed it so many times I can't remember. It has been red, yellow and white before this latest color. I think it was chrome but...who knows. I picked this color after I bought the bike from him and it has been like that ever since. It was different and I thought it looked good. I'm still kinda partial to it being that color. If I were to change it I don't think I would like it as much.

Re: 1985 GHP Pro
The color isn't right, but what the hell, right? I think in many ways, as "we" have been striving to re-build the bikes we admired in our childhood, there has been a huge emphasis on building exact reproductions and era correct pieces. I applaud those that do, but it does leave out an element that was very prevalent when we were young-customization and replacement of parts. If we decided we didn't care for the color(or the style of the week changed), what did we do? We painted it the color we wanted. When we broke something, did we search near and far for the exact same part? Not always. I, for example, would put the newer part on, if it made sense to do so.
The color might not be "right", and I personally don't care for the 48s on this bike, but it is a great example of a real bike from the period....

Re: 1985 GHP Pro
I was not sure of the original color of the bike because it had been repainted so many times. The colors I remember were red, white, yellow, dayglow orange and the color you see now. After some digging I found one of the earliest pics of it. The bike was originaly chrome. It didn't stay that color long. I wish he hadn't painted it but when the mood struck he changed the color. Subwax mentioned that I have been a little resistant in getting rid of it. I have always wanted a VDC but I think my GHP is pretty rare in its own right. I have been going back and forth on whether I wanted to trade it for a Changa. My friend that I bought it from died 2 days before this last Christmas. So it would be impossible for me to let it go now. Him racing that GHP and me on my Hutch was some of the best times growing up. We rode those damn things everywhere. I am going to restore it. I don't think I need to change much. All of the parts are the correct time period parts. Some are original to the bike when bought new. I will be painting it GHP red(I already have a chrome bike). I have got some gold 36 spoke wheels for it because I don't like the 48 spoke wheels either. They are going back on my Redline. When it is done I will repost the pics.

You should speak to Chip and C4labs about getting a powdercoat job done.He has a pretty good match for th 85 red. I have also got some 85 Pro II decals for her - you can restore her to her former glory.
My VDC is always here, waiting for you to change your mind.

nice bike. i was going to ask what it would take to pry this bike away from you, but after reading that your friend had past away, i think you should keep it forever also. i always wanted a ghp, it was going to be my next bike (bitd) then i got a car. i would powder it red, but that's just me. have fun restoring it.

Re: 1985 GHP Pro
Don't let these vultures sway you. I know it's not the original color, but I like it. BTW GHP used candy red, fire engine red, day glo orange and white. I don't remember ever seeing a yellow GHP from the factory. Great bike. I miss my GHP Long so bad.

Re: 1985 GHP Pro
Had the GHP long back in the day, but traded it after moving to a new city and away from my local track. Still regret it to this day. I built it from the frame and fork. Great find and perfect choice on the color! It looks very similar to the one I had.
