1987 Kuwahara Magician EX

This bike is pretty much all original to my knowledge. The bike looks really good from about 10 feet away. Needs a good cleaning and lube. I am debating whether to really strip her down and rebuild her from the ground up...or simply replace the broken parts (gyro, etc) and bring her back to factory spec while leaving the paint and stuff untouched. Any ideas are welcome here. smile

I would just clean it and lube it up and leave it in Survivor condition

I would replace the broken parts so you can at least ride the bike but save them just in case. I have one as well that needs a little work too. Its all there but a little ruff.

Re: 1987 Kuwahara Magician EX

glad you enjoy the bike... and I would honestly restore it... I had touched up the paint before I sold it to you but it is in the kind of condition that  is not really worth preserving... I'm not saying the bike is not a survivor, but it would look better with a fresh powder coat... I would also keep the original wheels vs tuffs... they look good... but it is yours now and you can do whatever you want.... cheers

Re: 1987 Kuwahara Magician EX

Hey BMX - I actually originally wanted to redo this Kuwi because I saw yours in the museum!   I know it's not stock, but I thought it looked awesome in black and white.

Blindfaith - I forgot your name on here because you erased the posting after I paid for the bike, but I just left you some positive feedback.  I will most likely keep it in this condition, even though I had every initial intention of copying the restoration color scheme of BMXinSF when I first purchased this bike off of you.  It was only after putting it back together and admiring the original paint and condition of the bike that I began to get second thoughts about a full era correct restoration.  I may just simply replace the brakes and gyro, clean her up a bit and let her be...     I'll keep you all posted..thanks again for the comments.

Re: 1987 Kuwahara Magician EX

I've got a yellow one in the basement.

It's rough.  I'm gonna do a complete restore if i can get a sticker set.   i may still restore it w/o a new sticker set.

I'll most likely take it to a paint shop, have them take color readings and match the paint for the respray.  chemical bath, strip the paint, etc.   then try and replace any bad parts to originals.   i have a drain pipe seat post on it.  i have the black "forward" style mags on it.  i didn't get it with rims.   i also put a compact disc on it.  replaced that HEAVY stock chain ring.

maybe i'll snap a few photos.  even though she's ROUGH.

peace

Re: 1987 Kuwahara Magician EX

i have the same bike in the same color but mine was so beat up that i am currently working on a restore here is what i have so far:

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg252/mid80sbmxer/DSCN0165.jpg

i still have the original stem, cranks and gyro and maybe brakes. I am going to build it up with yellow z-rims and black hubs/ spokes.

Restore it if its really bad is my advice.

This banana looks pretty factory spec already. wink
I would strip, clean, lube, replace broken gyro and add front lever, brakes and cable. smile
Good luck and have fun!
