Re: 1990 GT Vertigo Restoration

Got the 2nd set of decals back today. Both the size and the color turned out great.

http://www.therocketeer.net/blogphotos/decal-7.png

Once they were on I couldn't wait to get started on the final assembly. I hit a snag when I discovered some chrome on the crank threads, but I snapped a few pictures before calling it a night.

Re: 1990 GT Vertigo Restoration

The thread problem ended up being a little more serious than I thought. Unfortunately it was on the reverse thread side so I wasn't able to use a thread chaser. After trying several ideas the one that finally worked was to use a Dremel to completely remove the first few threads.

Re: 1990 GT Vertigo Restoration

Even though I distinctly remember removing the “Made in Taiwan"  sticker when I was 10, in the interest of originality I figured I’d give re-creating it a shot. Here is picture I used for reference.

http://www.therocketeer.net/blogphotos/taiwan-4.png

First step was to print the decal on clear waterslide paper. (To the right you can see what happened when I printed straight on the vinyl)

http://www.therocketeer.net/blogphotos/taiwan-1.png

I then transferred it to some aluminum vinyl I had from a previous project.

http://www.therocketeer.net/blogphotos/taiwan-2.png

After trimming the decal to just inside the line, it was ready to be applied.

http://www.therocketeer.net/blogphotos/taiwan-3.png

I'm still not sure it I'll keep it on, but at least the process worked and may come in handy in the future.

Re: 1990 GT Vertigo Restoration

This is a great thread.  Each time I follow a resto thread I learn something new.  Great idea to grind off the bad threads on that crank.  How long did it take?

Thanks, it took about 1/2 hour because I didn't wnat to take of any more than I needed to. I would stop frequently and try the nut untill it finally started. I was using a cut off wheel so I could do one thread at a time.

Re: 1990 GT Vertigo Restoration

Finished! Sort of...

I finally had a solid afternoon to tie up all the details I had been putting off. First I had to shorten the chain, which as it turn out with the proper tool is a lot easier. Then I shortened up all the brake cables, set up the Gyro and adjust the millions of brake adjustments.

A few things still on the list:
1. I'm on the lookout for a set of freestyle tread tires, but you know how that goes.
2. My chain is one link to long, but that can wait for another day.
3. I had originally planned on using the original seat. It's in good shape, but not perfect and it kind of sticks out now. I'm planning on testing out silk screening the GT wing logo on an old seat and depending on how that goes possibly try to restore one.

Re: 1990 GT Vertigo Restoration

Damn, this bike brings a tear to my eye.  This is exactly what mine looked like when I picked it up in 1991.

I sold it as a survivor...I think I need to build one again.

Real cool, J-PHX!
