1999 Dyno VFR
1999 Dyno VFR
Very nice mid-school Dyno. All original (it appears) except for the grips.
Picked this bike up while I was on vacation at the Jersey Shore. Saw it behind a garage as I walking to the beach. One door bell later and it was apart and in my rental car. I stipped it, boxed it, and brought it home to California with me...my WIFE thinks I'm nuts! Well I delt with the salt water rust on the bike, still some left and a bit of pitting, but not too bad. It has its bumps and bruises, but the paint is good and the wheels spin tru. The bike rides very nice. I don't get that these Dynos seem to be shunned by the BMX market, I have 3 and they are all really nice bikes... strong as hell...I like the Flatoval frame construction.

Well to answer this as politely as possible, this Dyno model in particular (as well as what many of their other models digressed to) was meant as a "kids" bike. In fact it's featured separately in an age limited catalog (something around 5-13yr olds) along with being in the regular catalogs, I'll have to scan the one I have next time I'm home.
Marketed towards kids and to be cost effective yet profitable for the company, it's not a full chromoly frame, it has basic parts on it, nothing is sealed, single wall rims, likely a half chromo half 1020 fork, etc...
If it's holding up for you than well your type of riding isn't pushing this weak frame beyond its stress limitations and that's ok. For most though, either they develop cracks around the head tube area (specifically the down tube) or the rear triangle twists/bends etc. and I don’t mean from fatigue after years of use, I mean within a week.
My lil disclamer:
This is no holier than thou BS speech, I've owned many different Dyno models in the past. Regardless it's likely you and or other onlookers will not respond well to this post, but facts are facts and I’ve kept my personal opinion out of everything I've written here. The info I’ve related here can be found in the catalogs available here in the restoration section and the catalog section, its interpretation however is up to the reader. Comb the site and you’re sure to find an example or two of the cracking/twisting of these frames under what others would consider normal use and I’ve personally seen more than one fail under use (though GT’s disclaimer already says that none of their bikes are to be used for any riding situation other than basically around the sidewalks, so I really don’t have to prove anything here).
On a side note, you may want to edit your title, these Dynos were not specifically called "flatoval" for the tubing style of the rear stays and having that in the title will likely confuse someone sooner or later.

They were under $200 new and could have been purchased for $150 or less depending on what time of the year.
I'm not trying to piss in anyones cheerios here, just stating the facts. If the bike holds up for you, great, but there's a reason higher quality bikes are available and one day you'll need one Boog ![]()
