Re: 1978 JC Penny Wild Silver
I had a older version of that bike when I was a kid called the swinger . I had wald bmx handlebars with Hunt Wilde grips and a messenger bmx seat and a knobbie rear tire and it was a jumping and wheelie machine . I do remember seeing some kids playing with the Huffy Thunder Road and thunder trail .

Re: 1978 JC Penny Wild Silver
My friend had this bike and we razzed him quite a bit because he got it at the Mall versus a bike shop. It didn't last long, the fork and stem gave out, and we convinced his parents to get him a Redline. I believe they threw away the bike and not sure what happened to the Redline either. Fun days though and thanks for the memory.

This is a great old bike, what did you find out about it? I don't see many of these around anymore. What is the general value?

Awesome bike and collection you have there. I had just found some photos of myself in 1979 with a Wild Silver from the same year. It's slightly different than the '78 model but still retains some of the general construction. Check out my post here: http://www.leftylimbo.com/?p=443
Thanks for sharing!

Re: 1978 JC Penny Wild Silver
My brother and I both got bikes Christmas of 1976 that were the predacessor to this one. It was orange, with a plastic gas tank on the frame and the old style banana seat. All that remains of it, (aside from the scar on the ankle from being impaled by the axle when the rubber pedal came off) is the number plate, tucked up in the attic. It says J.C. Penny Wild Lightning, and is #4. Thanks for posting such a classic - Tiki
