Re: Compare Ratios of Gearing
This is kind of cool Hobbes. At first I couldn't understand how you could get any value out of it for BMX. After I started playing with it I compared a 20" gear ratio to a 24" and [think I] figured out these should feel the same when pedaling:
44/16 @ 20" ~ = 37/16 @ 24"
Wheel Diameter: 20.00 inches
Gears: 44 16
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
SP CRxFW GI GIdf DI diff DF PRPM RT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1> 44x16 55.00 0.00% 172.79 0.00 14' 4.79" 366.69 1:2.75
Wheel Diameter: 24.00 inches
Gears: 37 16
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
SP CRxFW GI GIdf DI diff DF PRPM RT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1> 37x16 55.50 0.00% 174.36 0.00 14' 6.36" 363.39 1:2.31
Nifty (but made my head hurt)! ![]()

Re: Compare Ratios of Gearing
How do I figure out the height of my 20x1.95 tire? I got a bike that inherited a 41t front, already has 16t in back. Looking to know where to go to bring it to something like a 44/16. I only wanna change the freewheel. Thanks, sorry I am to lazy to do the math!

Kind of reminds me about a question I get, ALL THE TIME. "If i put 3 inch blocks in my leaf springs, how much will that lower me"?

Re: Compare Ratios of Gearing
I have a pit bike with a lot of BB shell clearance and a 18.25" TT.
16" wheels.
I'm running 172mm Bullseye cranks, but was wondering about gearing.
I'd like to mimic/copy, the best I can, a 44/16 setup.
Any ideas with regard to the little guy?
Thanks for the help!
Eric

Re: Compare Ratios of Gearing
i am building a cruiser, whats the best gears to use for just rollin around town ? i will not be racing. i will be using 180mm or longer cranks. it seems a 16t freewheel is the most popular and 44t for a chainring. i have check the charts, but seems to be for racing not just goofing off and rollin around town.
live life, because tomm might be your last.

Re: Compare Ratios of Gearing
For getting around- I've gone from 30/10 (which I was happy with) to 30/9 (undecided).
I wouldn't be happy with anything less/slower ![]()

Re: Compare Ratios of Gearing
My bike is 43/16 Im not sure how long the crank arms are, its a 93 Robinson Pro, It seems like I run out of gearing after just a couple of cranks on the pedals, what set up should I use to get more out of it? Oh I'm pretty tall too if that has anything to do with it, 6'2".
