1978 Diamondback MX

My parents bought this for me in the fall of 1978.   It was rare for me to get anything new and it required my parent’s to make payments before the bike was actually mine to take home.  It was purchased new at a local bike shop.  I raced it until 1983 when my interest switched to cars.  The bike was stored at my parent’s house until a few years ago when I dug it out of the garage and decided to restore it.  My son had just learned how to ride a bike and I knew I wanted his 1
st
bike to be a Diamondback.  That got me looking at all the great information on the internet and raised my interest back into my old bike.  Once I started restoring my bike I got some information from Sparky and realized the rarity of these bikes and decided it was worth spending the money to have it back to original.
I have all the original parts except for the seat, handle bars, tires and seat clamp.  When I restored it I purchased NOS parts to replace some of the parts that were beat up and switched the pedals from kkt-b-mx which were originally on it.  I still have the original pedals and other parts.  The bike has always been black.  I had it completely striped down and powder coated black.  The cranks are S R royal 170 which I had re-anodized back to original.

After all these years I am thankful that I kept my old bike and am able to enjoy it a second time around.  I won’t be riding it but it sure does look good hanging in my office.

Thanks for all the great comps - we raced for a local bike shop Bombergs.  My dad was the coach.  We were like the bad news bears of racing.  "We run what you brung".  We were the poor mans race team but won a ton of trophies!  Those were the days.

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Re: 1978 Diamondback MX

Hi, very nice bike. Great story as well. What were the original bars that were on it and what did you end up putting on it?
