1978 Mongoose Motomag

I just recently restored my old Mongoose Motomag. I use to love these bikes as a kid. I completely cleaned and polished each part. I had to replace the decals, seatpost, pedals, grips and pads because the originals were shot. The pedals are MKS "Rat trap" and the pads are Mongoose originals. These bikes are just cool looking!

Re: 1978 Mongoose Motomag

I appreciate the compliment anyway Grinch.
The pedals are MKS rat traps.  I thought KKT's were bicycle chains?
Not sure!!!!
I'll work on getting a back door in my next set of pics.

Re: 1978 Mongoose Motomag

here is how i remember the pedal thing, were going back to the 70's here so dont beat me up if my memory fails.
we used to steal the pedals, seats, goose necks, and seatpost's from our big sisters 10 speed bikes, (they never rode them anyway)at the time the only pedals we had were those ice cream sandwich looking things.
we would rattlecan them black and that gave us macho looking pedals, at least until they fell apart that is.
then came the KKT's . they were purpose biult BMX pedals, and we all rode down and bought them as fast as Rick at Rick's bycycle city could sell them. All you had to do was pop the reflectors off and mount them.
it only took about 6 months until the aisen knok-offs were at deportment stores.
KKT's were about 30 bucks and the knok-offs were 6 or 8 bucks.
Then KKT did the unthinkable.....
They beat the compitition at there own game, they introduced rounded end pedals with a much more beefy and very sharp set of teeth.
a few months later KKT had a chrome plated chain and was now using the lighter and still strong black plastic.
Then there was this very large amount of pedal types for BMX comming out.
I dont remember what ever became of KKT but by then any black BMX pedal was called KKT. kinda like how someone might say "Tuff wheel mag's" we all know what they mean. But "Mag" means Magnisium (spelled wrong im sure) Not nylon.....

Re: 1978 Mongoose Motomag

OK. I know what you're talking about. I remember those old black rubber pedals. My diamond back came with the MKS' "KKT" pedals. They're curved with the sharp spikes. I tell you what, those things hurt like hell when you got whacked in the shin. I can't tell you how many times that'd happen and I wished I had the cheap rubber ones. Thanks for the insight and complement on the goose. I've thought about building another one, but am not sure yet.
I'll post some more pics soon.
