80 Diamondback Large Pro

This was my childhood bike. Still a survivor with original paint and decals. It rides as well as it did back in the day. It has all the original parts: Diamondback seat, DB stem, WIN Bars, DB three piece cranks, DB california lite pads, Dia Compe brakes, MKS pedals, Araya rims and Suzue hubs.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

I have an old Diamond Back that was originally red.  It is around the same age as the Senior Pro.  When i bought it(£10 in 1986) it was in a sorry state.  It was matt black, it still had traces of red(in between the scratches!).  I've just had it re sprayed the same red as it was originally.  The parts look different to the senior pro.  Mine has a one piece crank.  Is this a Senior Pro or a Pro 4 or a Pro?  If any one could shed any light for me it would be nice! cheers J.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

Hey Jooche1.
I'm not sure what model you have. I wasn't sure about mine until I recently saw one for sale on ebay. All my friends had mongooses at the time and weren't sure what model mine was back then. I knew mine was a lot lighter and faster than theirs though. Not to brag smile
I wish I could help you out. Maybe you could google it and see what you come up with? You should put some pics up so maybe someone could help.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

The frame number is 0J2355 with a circular thing on the end.  Its located on the inside of the rear forks(where the wheel goes).  There is a number under the bottom bracket that is 343.  Can anyone make any sense of these numbers? Are these similiar to the senior pro pictured? Cheers J

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

I'm not sure how to reference the serial number. I know the little baseball symbol means that it's early eighties or late seventies.
Mine has that symbol next to it also. Sorry i'm not more help!

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

These are the original decals. Luckily, I kept my bike out of the elements over the years. Every now and then you'll see some on Ebay. I'd check on there every couple of days. I know I've seen originals and replicas at least a few times.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

I rode this thing pretty hard so I'd say it's durable. I never had any problems with it. Nitrus' are cool. I like the new school rides.
Thanks for the compliment. You should post your bike so I could check it out.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

Does your bike have the small european bottom bracket? Are you sure about the year? I have one like this and was looking for info on it. My serial #is WJG 066 and it is stamped on the bottom bracket. I also need stickers!

hey jooche....that serial means its a 1980...and that circle is a baseball, which means it was made overseas. hope that helps some

hey scraplord, i'm not sure about the bottom bracket. But the baseball symbol does mean from overseas. As soon as I get time, I will post some more detailed pics.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

Hey bmx addict, no baseball symbol on mine. Check out the pictures of my frame in the ad above this one. Gary thinks its a 1978 prototype. Neither one of us has seen another like it. Has anyone seen one like it? BTW, nice bike! I wish mine looked that nice.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

Thx for the compliment Scraplord. I have seen these before. They are pretty rare. I believe they are the first of the Diamondbacks. I've seen two others for sale on ebay. I've only seen them as frames though. The forks on yours are similar to mine with the double dropouts, but mine has the diamond on the welded part. Sorry I don't have better pics. When the weather gets nice again, i'm going to take closer and more detailed pics. Too bad there's not a website that gives better info on these early DBs. Can't wait to see yours finished. It'd be nice to see one these completely restored. I assume they use the same decals as mine, but I'm not sure.

Hello Scraplord, the bottom bracket is Tange.  I'm in England, so it could've been made over this way possibly?  Cheers Jooche

These are the original rims and hubs that came with the bike new. Are you trying to build a DB to specs?

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

yes i have a 1980 (0 at the front of serial) senior pro db with the baseball (made in Japan). I'm about to get the rust bucket chromed and need db pads, stem and cranks. I do have a nice set of blue (old school) tourney three piece cranks which is close enough for me. I know i'll be paying out of my butt for some dia compe mx 1000 brake setup according to how much they are fetching on e-bay at the moment. Bye the way are the brakes dia compe????..... I also purchased some decals but I think they are for 1981-82 bike. The snake ones are what I need. Finally, I could be one of two things!!! An almost middle aged dude whose past has been ressurrected and I'm in pursual of reliving my childhood or just a grumpy fart with nothing much to do. I think I maybe both!
see ya!

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

As said before your bike is an October 1980 model made in Japan and came with Araya 7x and Suzue hubs as standard.  I believe this model to be top of the range when it came out until the Harry Leary Turbo came out in 1982.

Anyway for an original bike it is not in bad nick, especially in red.

Re: 1980 Diamondback Large Pro

Thanks Shiva. Yeah, as soon as the Turbo was out I believe they had stopped making the SR Pro. Thanks for checking it out.

Hey Peirce, the brakes are Dia Compe. Keep watching Ebay for the decals. They do pop up every now and then. I have seen the blue DB pads also. If I see any, i'll shoot you a post or an email. It's gonna take time to find all these parts. DB parts are pretty rare. It took me over a year just to find the pads. I had my originals but they were pretty shot. I know how you feel though, i call it my early midlife crisis. Hey it could be worse, we could all be addicted to drugs instead of BMX.
