1985 American Bicycle Manufacturing Race Tech
1985 American Bicycle Manufacturing Race Tech
Made around 1985. One of aprox 50, sat idle from 1989-2009.
I got this bike from the same friend as my Race Tech freestyle bike. He bought this direct from his friends at ABM, frame only. It was powdercoated black but shortly after was stripped and polished. An employee at ABM welded up the Hutch forks to give even more options than just the adjustable head tube. From the wear marks it looks like only one setting was used, but neat idea anyway. I painted the bottom white to cover the chrome plating that was ruined from the welding. Put the Redline cranks with Hutch pedals on it from the freestyle bike, Pro Class wheels that I had as a kid but with new Bullseye hubs, and other parts were in a box he gave me: Gt seatpost, DK stem, Dia Compe brakes, old chain, seatclamp. Won the Haro numberplate, and the Twin Cities Rock 104 80's sticker I had!! Odi grips, Viscount seat, GT tires, bars, cable, came from BMX Museum and Ebay. I polished the aluminum frame, and it will probably stay this way. Serial number 047.

Re: 1985 American Bicycle Manufacturing Race Tech
Nice builds...exept the freestyle bike should NOT have alloy 3 piece cranks on it. as you stated you swapped the flights for alloy cranks....freestyle you want durable....race you want light...but they are yours to build the way you want....so thats just a suggestion of my opinion. ![]()
I actually really like the white...! ![]()
Bill should have sent you the pics of the original stickers. I showed my NOS frame at the mn faction BBQ this past 09.

Re: 1985 American Bicycle Manufacturing Race Tech
The original Freestyle bike had redline 3 piece cranks. I know as it was in my garage for many years.
I also have a set of NOS race tech stickers and my good friend has an NOS frame.

You would think if they could produce a $25,000 MTB they could put out a few more of these. It looks like some unique ideas.

Re: 1985 American Bicycle Manufacturing Race Tech
Here are few more pics of the American BMX frame - known as the Race-Tech. The first is #2, a custom prototype made with a lighter top tube. The first frame borrowed the geometry of a Hutch. The orange frame made slight modifications to the geometry before the final production run - which I believe was 50 frames.
Some frames were sold from that run, but it's my understanding that many of the frames were eventually trashed for safety reasons as they had problems with cracking at the head. I recommended a gusset in my design tweaks, but the owner of American didn't want to make it look any different than the steel frames of the day. This was a high tech frame, using 6061 T6 AL in 1984.

Sure, it has two cups that are eccentric. You rotate the cups to achieve two different head angles or two different wheel bases.
