1977 Free Spirit

5th birthday present

Quickly tore the back of the seat up popping wheelies at the end of my driveway, replaced with same style flamed seat, also from Sears.  They guys down the street owned Kawasaki bikes with shocks and had orange flags at the back.  I saw them riding really fast and thought to do so you had to wobble back and forth.  This led to my first memory of high speed crash.  Later removed fenders and chain guard and put my sister's white free spirit 10 speed seat on.  Looped out of a ditch jump and broke the handle off of the bars and that's all I remember.

Re: 1977 Free Spirit

I just bought two of these bike this summer at a community sale.A older man was selling them, both in pretty good shape, still had original tires, asking 25 for both.So i offered him 10 for one, then came back later and bought the other one for 5 bucks.......There isn't much info on these bikes, but a pretty cool find......

Re: 1977 Free Spirit

Great story! I had that same exact bike. After awhile, I took it apart and painted it candy apple red and left the fenders off. I remember using the rear fender to chuck wiffle balls.

Re: 1977 Free Spirit

My fiirst bike was a White Freespirit. Banana seat, wide bars, no crossbar, 1 speed with hand brakes., May have had a 3 speed internal, cant remember. But it was my first, learned to wheelie and bunnyhop on that bike, after I bent 2 or 3 back steel rims, I moved up to a Royce union with heavy duty Femco rims. Cheng shin block knobbie tires.Number plates and high fenders. Waffle grips. Originally had a crazy fork brace, reminded me of a springless springer front end, it was rigid...... Good times......

Re: 1977 Free Spirit

Love the story, bro! big_smile  Love the bike too - it's perfect for a 5 year old but it's kind of scary how the handle bar broke off like that.

WANT TO BUY:
A'ME goggles (black) with the black strap and white font on it that says A'ME from the 1980s
"GEAR" RACING PANTS from 80s - size 32"-34"
zeronine gloves "Wrist-Wrap" (black and white)
1982-83 Mongoose helmet wrap-around decal
pm or email cool

Totally missing the point since 1971.
