NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

http://i751.photobucket.com/albums/xx155/bigdose911/PB060401.jpgGentlemen I need a little help. I have 2 issues really. Im not sure which one of these to build right now. Because some of the parts will be on one or the other to make it complete I cant do both. The black one is of course 401Flightcranks NOS Big Tube i got off him months back. The chrome one is my Big Tube TEAM model that I tried to sell a few times here and on the bay. Unfortunately nobody realized just how rare a TEAM model is. Im actually glad it didnt sell. I got thru the hard times and I still have the only TEAM model known to man! lol. Anyway the TEAM model needs a bath and stickers removed. I do have a NOS set of Big Tube decals for it (another sick rarity). The black one is ready for assembly. Which brings me to issue #2: if I do the black one Im not so sure of the Elf bars. Im beginning to think theyre too angular for the build. Also Im looking for a DX seat post of the black one. I think $191 on the bay is about double what theyre worth. So theyre it is--- Which one to build? And if the black one Elf bars or no Elf bars? If not any suggestions? Has to be something different and findable! Dont tell me VDC or GJS bars!lol. DUH! Thanks guys----Davehttp://i751.photobucket.com/albums/xx155/bigdose911/PB060403.jpg

i don't usually chime in on race threads, but your profile pic lured me in big_smile

sell both pairs of 48's.  buy a nice pair of 36's and some vdc bars.  build the black now and start collecting for the chrome.

that's the way i'd go.

awesome, awesome bikes by the way.

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

Leave the black one NOS do not build.
Clean up the team model (please leave the original stickers) And build that one.
Ditch the 48's get a killer set of race wheels.
No to the Elf bars.

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

You guys are killin my 48s:lol:I'm really just buliding bikes that I think look cool. Not necessarally "correct" bikes. The cranks are BOSS cranks which I got cuz they're perfectly round. Same as Elf bars and Crupi peds. The Elfs are prob out. But what to use? And what peds if not Crupi's?

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

Hey guys the sticker set I have for the TEAM model is a NOS set I got from the GJS factory rider with the f/f set. He used to change them every time he raced so they looked good for magazine pics. So wouldnt they keep the integrity or originality? And thanks for the compliments. On the bikes and the avatar wink

well If you don't care about being era correct use what ever you want. you have 2 rare pieces and I just figured you would want to do them justice. not a salad bike. if cool looking is what your after then go for it.  I myself would go a different route . they are your bike.  don't ask questions if you don't want to here the answer's . Crupi pedals are better suited for mid school bikes. same with the ELF bars.  and 48's are great on a freestyle build.  good luck with what ever you pick.

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

Yea bro youre right. I def DO want to hear opinions. I guess Im right in the middle as far as being "correct" and cool looking. Im not gonna slap these together for sure. I ask because I was poor as a kid and just used to ride up to the bike shop and admire the Big Tubes and then ride my Huffy home. So Im still learning what parts would be best suited for them. Thanks.

man really cool that you have 2 such rare big tubes. i know the black one is the stunner but the chrom one is the one i can't stop staring at. i wouldn't use elf bars or 48's but they are your bikes so just go for whatever you like. submit these beauties to the museum so i can fave em!

glad you still have the chrome one i would leave the frame in the condition it's in lookjs pretty damn clean from here. i like the ridden look. if i had to sell one it would be the black one cause i wouldn't be able not to ride a bike that cool

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

Thanks Squirrel. I agree the Team model is insane (I was REALLY broke when I tried to sell it!) Just a little rust in the tight spots. JU said he raced the original Big Tube set but felt it was too short. So he had a few Team models made for the boys. The thing about not bathing it is what to do with the NOS set of decals for it?!

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

Build the team model. Keep the Black one NOS.

Ditch the 48's

Dont use the elf bars.

Dont use the boss cranks

Sell those parts and you will have enough to build it era correct.

Both bikes deserve to be era correct. and they will still be way freaking cool looking.

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

So it seems unanimous: dump the 48's, and no Elf bars. So that means chrome Araya's right? I'm not stuck on any of the stuff really. All of it could change!

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

are the boss cranks really that off as far as era wise? maybe the guy rode it for a couple year then got the cranks... in theory. to me era correct is within a few year usually 2 in each direction of the date of the frame and fork. i'd used the boss cranks on the team one

i mean come on if the frame is a 82 (i have no idea of actual year) and the cranks are say maybe 84 or 85 (again just example) is that really such a crime?

Good I was hoping the cranks were correct. I think they suit either bike and they're not another set of Flights. No disrespect to Flight lovers. I know they're popular for a reason. Thanks

Re: NOS GJS Big Tube or Big Tube TEAM MODEL

I agree Squirrel. To me its 70's vs 80's vs 90's and beyond. Anything 80's works for me. That's why I thought the 1st gen Crupi 4 pinners were good. Are they later? Either way I wouldn't just limit it to 84-85 parts. The 2yrs Big Tubes were made.
I spoke with Nick Waters, the guy that welded all the Big Tubes with George at GJS. He said they were so busy building ET's for Kuwi m-f and the Big Tubes on the weekend that he can't even remember when they did the Team models. Thanks bro.
