Redline experts!!!!!! Early 80's Proline/Carerra question
First, what are the differences between the two, if any? I just I.D.'d a frame at my LBS as a Proline. This frame has no cross brace between the chain stays. Does that mean anything? Any help appreciated.

early '82 had the cross brace, but i believe it will need to be the Japanese made frame to have it that early.

These are both 82's.... no B.B./chainstay brace. RB ##### serial numbers.
This is a MX-III, so I guess it doesn't count.

Re: Redline experts!!!!!! Early 80's Proline/Carerra question
bmxfetish has posted up an '82 without a bb brace but i have seen '82's with it. i would suggest a change may have been made to the Japanese built frames somewhere in the mid 1982 year to include this brace. the US built frames got the brace either late '82 or early '83.
i'm still working on evidence to see if ALL 1981/'82 Japanese made proline-II frames had the brazed rear drops. at the moment i believe the early ones did.
please note we are talking about the proline-II (carrera PL-20) frames here. the original poster hasn't given us a pic or serial to see if the frame he has seen is a proline or proline-II.

Serial is 360575. The frame the larger sized gusset, and the "sculpted"(for lack of a better word) 5" head tube. He doesn't have a fork with it either. I will try to stop in and get pictures, and check to see if it has brazed drop outs too.

Re: Redline experts!!!!!! Early 80's Proline/Carerra question
the 2 easiest differences to see are the head tube gusset and the rear dropouts. there are other differences, maily geometry, but these are the quickest and easiest things to look for straight up.
the proline has a small gusset and rear drops that are the same as the mx-II like this
proline
the proline-II has a large gusset and it's own rear drops like this
proline-II
