Man, I bought a set of the new white Ames for my PFT build that I'm collecting parts for. Wrong color, but these were the correct grips for the build and they don't make black. fair enough I thought. The price was right, so I'll take a shot at dying them since I have another set of grips here to dye black. I've been boiling these things forever. the set of Oakleys that I had in the same pot were finished long ago. These Ames don't seem to want to take the dye. I'd be lucky to say that they are half way there! Anyone have any experience with these things?

Post some pics I'm curious how they look now. Sorry I don't have any advise since I have never tried to dye anything.

No experience but have a set of b1-b sleeves that i need to change the colour of..
If nothing else im feeling a bit more comfortable about it now with what ive just read..
The oakleys would be a touch softer than the ame's i take it?

DIFFERENT FORMULAS.... MY PVC PIPE IS THE SAME WAY. EACH COMPANY HAS THEIR OWN "MIX",SO THEY ACT DIFFERENTLY. DID YOU GET THE STOVE CLEAN BEFORE THE WARDEN CAME HOME?

She caught me in the act of cleaning. Just finishing up actually. She was proud of me. I usually slack at cleaning and she picks up where I leave off. I finished the Oakleys before I saw you this afternoon, whent to the store to get oven cleaner, and cleaned. After seeing the Oakleys and my fine cleaning job, she asked, "Why don't you finish those other grips tonire? I'll watch them." So I got the pot going again and went downstairs to play Madden online while i watched the game on PIP. I came up a couple hours later. She said, "I'm going to bed. I added water a couple of times when it needed it." Now here we are with me on my laptop and the grips still boiling.

EDIT- Now that I'm looking, I noticed that she had a great idea to help with cleanup - She lined the burner pan and a large surrounding area with Reynolds Wrap. - GENIOUS!

Great news! I boiled the Ames for a while last night and left them sit in the pot over night. They're a lot darker. Very close to the black that I want. I'll add a pack of dye and boil them for a couple more hours tonite. Hopefully they'll be black!

Does the color penetrate very far into the grip? Just wondering if its for show only or can you use them when your done?

Be careful when dying grips or other parts .I bought a set of dyed grips and put them on a set of white hutch bars and when i took them off of the bars there was a stain the size of the grips on both sides and it would not come out at all. And not just a light stain but a huge dark stain as black as the grips.

just curious which A'MEs you can't find in black? I've bought both new Rounds, Minis, and Tris in black in the past year. Tris and Minis came from my LBS and the Rounds from eBay.

They came in a lot that i bought wasnt gonna throw them out ....

Got pics? I tried some Oakley yellow sleeves to black and as close as I got was an ugly green. I boiled those F-er's for an hour. Too little?

Its the Ame Rounds that you can't find like the ones on 87 PFT's. The new ones have the raised "lip" around the end. The originals didn't have that. Someone on here got ahold of a few pairs, but only in white. I bought a set.

The Oakleys that I did were originally yellow. I got them from Dan, (dontfeartheripper) who had attempted to dye them blue. That turned them to baby sh1t green. I took the green Oakleys and dyed them black. they turned out 100% black.

I'll be mounting the Oakleys on chrome bars, so that's an easy clean if it stains with either oven cleaner or acetone. The black Ames are going on black bars, so no stain.

It'll definately take longer than an hour of boiling. Try about 5 hours.

Here's some pics of the Oakleys that I did as well as the ames that are boiling right now:

No, he can't. I just looked back and I bought these from him. Before buying these, I asked him if he could get them in black. he said the answer was no. he said that he contacted Ame and tried to order them. Ame told him that they wern't sure how he got these since they don't even have a mold to make these. So he had a very limited supply (I think 6 sets) of white only. Kinda sucks when you're collecting parts to build a black 87 PFT.

BOTTOM LINE TO THIS STORY: Oakleys can be Dyed - New Ame's can't

I boiled the Ames for 15+ hours and they still will not fully take dye.............
