Stuck seatpost
I mentioned in another post last night I got an 87 Haro Master, and the seatpost is stuck in it. And I mean really stuck. Does anyone have any suggestions for removal? I've put about a whole can of PB Blaster down the tube and it still won't budge.

Re: Stuck seatpost
If there is some of the post coming out of the tube. Take a drill with a metal bit make a hole in the post all the way through. Then take a screwdriver that fits in the hole. A long bit or whatever you have and start twisting!

Re: Stuck seatpost
Im +hinkin on the back of the seat post tube. Drill a hole where you can into the seat post. wd40 the hell out of it. You cant do the first option now. So since you have that open spot on the back tube drill and from the bottom up and tap with a beater screwdriver

Re: Stuck seatpost
Interested to know how this works. I have a steel post stuck in my 83 cali, and an aluminum post stuck in my FlyBikes Diablo. I have tried ammonia on the aluminum, as well as PB, and used the rest of the can on the cali. Also have pedals stuck on the Cali.

Re: Stuck seatpost
I have the same issue with my DK promotion...
I drilled a hole in the bottom of the bottom bracket to try to punch it out... no dice
The way I see it I have 2 options now (since there is ZERO post showing)
1) just take a smaller seat post and insert it into the old post (I had one that fit, but my dumb butt sold it)
2) this may be a long shot, but It is just crazy enuf to work.. take a star fangled nut and drive it in the seat post and thread that sucker outta there.... like I said, long shot, but might work
steal it like you ride it!... wait

What's the deal with the amonia? I've never heard of that before.
ammonia breaks the chemical bond between alloy and metal.
i had to fill the seat tube with deep creep one time on a very hard post.
i let it sit for about a week. still hard to get out but it did.
wd40 sucks for getting stuck stuff loose. it may say penetrating oil
on the can, but it sucks for that.
the atf/acetone trick is pretty cool

Re: Stuck seatpost
Did that seatpost ever come out? I am thinking of buying a 83 DB with the same deal.

Re: Stuck seatpost
Haven't had a chance to try yet. I never made the hardware store for the acetone and tranny fluid. It was also suggested putting some heat to it. I'm going with the acetone/tranny fluid first, but I might not be able to get to the store until tomorrow as I'm back at work again. Is nail polish remover straight acetone? If that's the case I can do try it tonight. One thing that's causing the problem from what I'm told is it's an aluminum post in a steel frame, so who knows what kind of reaction went on there. I'm hoping I can free it up, because I stripped the paint off the frame, what little was on there, and this thing should clean up nice. I still need forks for it too.
I'll pop on and post something as soon as I try it.

Re: Stuck seatpost
Well, no luck so far with the acetone and tranny fluid. I was wrong about the post being aluminum as well, I did a magnet test on it. One other thing I'm gonna try when I get the time, is a soak in vinegar. That might loosen up some of the rust a bit. I got a new container that I can submerge the whole frame in. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Stuck seatpost
Best of luck. I know this can be a nightmare, it's as if the post is cold welded to the frame. I have the broken stuck post problem with a Pistol Pete frame. I was able to wedge a chisel in between the post and the frame, but only a few inches, kept squirting the PB in there, didn't work. Eventually decided to saw the thing, but it's taking forever, it's hard to saw all the way down there. I may have to resort to a drill press.

Re: Stuck seatpost
If it was a little bigger, I could fit a sawzall down there, but the blades aren't narrow enough. I looked down it with a flashlight and it's apparently the longest seatpost ever. It seems to go all the way to the bottom. Using a hacksaw blade by hand will take forver, though I do have all winter. Being as patient as I am, I want it done yesterday.

Re: Stuck seatpost
Honestly, the stuck seat post thing can be a complete nightmare. So many people have so many different methods but they usually require a bunch of time, chemicals or lubricants etc. and it doesn't always work.
There are just too many variables to know for sure without inspecting each individual case. Obviously, the longer the post has been "dormant" the worse it becomes. Also, after a certain length of time the post can actually bond with the frame on a molecular level. This is most common with posts that are aluminum stuck in metal frames.
If the post has "bonded" with the frame, usually no amount of acids, antifreeze, PB Blaster, heat (which often makes it worse), dry ice, twisting, smashing or whatever can break the bond. Some of these methods can also simply crack or shear the seat post tube as a result... Bye, bye, original frame...
The saw blade method takes forever and can be a real bitch too...
I usually go straight to the local machine shop and get them drilled out for 20 bucks when they are really, really stuck. No headaches, no wasting time.
As a collector of vintage Mongoose, Webco and Redline stuff all of which is mostly around 30 + years old, when I get a frame with a stuck seat post, I don't waste my time because those bad boys are usually "bonded" with the frame.
It sucks to deal with, but it's also a great way to get a nice old frame for cheap. "Oh the seat post is stuck?" Sheesh, you'll have to knock off 50 bucks on this frame!" Ha! ![]()

i would not do this and heres why...
when vinegar looses/eats rust, it will fill in even tighter.
it would be like filling the seat tube with sand, then stuffing a post down in it.
if you 'for sure' want the post out and you dont care what happens to the post....
tie the frame to a tree and the post to a cable thats clamped to your vehicle.
in between this have a coma-a-long hand wench. the wench will pull it out. for sure.
drill a hole in the post to get the cable thru if needed. post will almost always be toast afterwords.
