1998 Trek SubAtomic

Shiny...

Sold: 2009-11-22
Edit 2012-03-29: turns out this is a SubAtomic, not a SubCulture.
This bike started as frame only find via Craigslist.  It had been sticker-bombed and was in rough shape.  Just removing the stickers was a 4-5 hour job.  I stripped the clear coat and hand-polished the frame to a near chrome finish.  I built the rest up from parts I had on hand.  If I had to name this bike I'd call it "Mutt" because it has pieces from a little bit of everything.  It is a tight and light little rider, though.

Re: 1998 Trek SubAtomic

So how did you strip the clear -just paint remover -or was it an anodized clear?
I'm looking to do something similar with Gary Fisher frame I have.  I love these Sub Cultures -and the S.C. SS in particular -don't see them often.

Re: 1998 Trek SubAtomic

I just edited the bike comments with a post I wrote on how to remove stickers (and clear coat).  The clear coat removal was an accident but worked out nicely!  big_smile

Re: 1998 Trek SubAtomic

I actually have no idea what brand fork was on that.  I bought a bunch of used forks from a bike shop and they had no markings.  I'm not sure what an S-2 is but the headset was just a plain old Aheadset.

Re: 1998 Trek SubAtomic

Nice bike you have there.
I recently scored a aluminium frame painted in rattle can flat black and didnt know what it was.
Couldnt work out what the stamping on the rear drop outs were.
Found out it was a Trek Sub Culture from another forum.
Looked it up on here and found yours.
I dummy'd mine up with 1" head set and forks instead of the proper 1 1/8 head set, forks.
Here is a few pics of mine .

Re: 1998 Trek SubAtomic

You know what - Wired and Datsun - your bikes aren't actually the Sub Culture.  They are the Sub Atomic.
That was also an aluminum frame bike -but the Atomic had the old school style rounded seat stays and the flying brake gusset.

The Sub Culture has wishbone style chainstay.

The Culture is also a Pro XL size, and the Atomic is Expert size.

http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a588/kopwithit/IMG_0514_zps53c2e776.jpg

The frame took me 8hrs to strip clear-coat and polish.Awesome welds w/thick tubes and rear drop-outs.The frame is an xxl -size and feels long and really lite.Came w/chromo forks,bars,3-pc cranks and seat post.Heres the major difference between Atomic and Subculture, the solid rear frame drop from seat mast.

Very cool bike and looks sweet next to big brother,97 Y-5 Anno full-suspension MTB.
