Re: Elf hubs - rough date / generation

i remember elf hubs being around in the mid 90's but i can't recal what year they actually started making them.

i just happen to have an october of 96 issue of bmx plus! sitting in front of me. this issue had a guide to all the wheels available at the time.or atleast most of them.

in the buyers guide they had two types of elf hubs. the engraved (your hubs) and regular elf alloy cartrige. i believe those ones had the elf decal on the center of the hub.

the cheaper complete wheelset had a retail price of $99.95 and were laced to weinmann 1.75 double wall rims

then they had your hubs laced to elf aluminum 1.75 polished for $179.95 (rims could be araya,weinmann,sun,etc.. does not state)

in that same issue of bmx plus!

dans comp wanted $99.99 for elf chrome hubs weighing in at 20.oz
for $150 you could get them with titanium axles weighing in at 15.5oz

(on page 60 of that issue showing the wheelsets they have the elf rim size listed at 1.5") from the pic you have above your rims appear to be 1.5".i have no idea if yours are factory built or custom built.

Re: Elf hubs - rough date / generation

Thanks guys. Ds-1 - thanks for the research and detailed report! I assumed that they are mid-90s, which is a bit of a shame, since that does not make them era-correct for the bike (which is a Hudge Judge in Chrome). It is custom-built, I'll upload pictures to the musuem soon. I haven't yet received the bike. With the French postal workers on strike (for over a week now), it might still take another week or so to make its way over.

The Rims are Araya 7x 1.75. I have no idea if the hubs are the version with Titanium axle or the standard one, probably only one way to find out - weighting them. But that would be a hell of an effort, so I guess I just live with that bit of uncertainty - If that's the worst in my life .... :-)

Re: Elf hubs - rough date / generation

Yep not titanium. Just the upgrade standered hubs. Ti look a little like bullseye hubs in the middle.
