Not NOS...check the top tube decal...pretty beat up.  1985 Californians came with Series III Hard Anodized wheel set.

Nice bike...but not NOS and not part correct.

Re: Just Purchased a Brand New Mongoose Californian

According to the vintage magazine they came out with two Californians, one was a tc model with the pro allow rims, and one was the tc, the pro version. They came in three colors red, Blue, and Black. for 50.00 dollars more you could upgrade to the tc model and get the full pro version including 3 piece cranks and the III rims, or the non tc Pro model with the alloy rims but still considered a pro model. They also had the Expert model and yours truly if that's you, the Eric Rupe series.
I know because I had this same bike when I was younger, aside from the tires, and that's it,  it's a true Californian, new out of the box. We could not afford the extra 50 bucks so I went with the cheaper pro model, and that left me with this exact bike only it was red. He works, so I will get the serial number, and a picture for those doubters.

I have seen pictures of the bike close up and the box and your observation of the top decal is way off base. Its a different decal because it's not the tc version. Also you had a choice of wheels and three piece cranks when you purchased the bike. Dean Moriset worked for Mongoose at the same time and I have verified all of this with him, before I bought it for a steal I might ad.  This is like any other forum, always a critic who wants to rain down on your excitement. By picking things apart. Most of the time it's just envy that brings these things out.
Also this could be a carry over from 1984 with an added seat post as stated in the mongoose Catalogues, changes in color and options may vary from state to state. The 1984 is exact with the exception of the general catalogue showing straight seat posts. Who knows, but to assume you know it's not NOS and know everything is a bit presumptuous. I will figure it out for all those who want or need to feel superior when I get it in my hands.

TY, my first post and a bunch of call outs, could you not have just said nice bike congrats! PM me with your all knowing info and above all statements like

Not NOS...check the top tube decal...pretty beat up.  1985 Californians came with Series III Hard Anodized wheel set.

Nice bike...but not NOS and not part correct.

I found out the complete

Re: Just Purchased a Brand New Mongoose Californian

Wow...you are taking the above statement all wrong.  I could care less if it is NOS or not.  I was just pointing out what I could observe from the pictures posted and hope someone did not get roped into paying NOS price for something that just might not be NOS.

I'm glad you stated that you got it for a steal.

I'd hate to sound even more presumptuous...but it also looks as if the rear Pro Class hoop has brake rub on it.

Oh..."envy"...as far as Mongoose goes...roll.

No hard feelings though.

I agree here, it does look like there is brake rub on the back rim from the picture you posted above.

Hey "Elkaholic", have you referenced this bike with others in the museum?
Or even glanced at "AtariAger" posted bikes?

lol I get ya, brake rub OMG unreal, they can spot alot from a downsized and repixeled picture, oh better not get into computer talk now, I could really get them going with how a resized picture from an original pixilates and acually reduces pixels by taking pixels out of the pitcture giving it imperfections, both good and bad LMFAS

Just saying there is far too little positive reinforcement for new members at the moment and every time i jump on the Museum theres someone cutting someone else down. For example I avoid Hutch threads like the plague they are out of control. Point is the dude was just sharing a huge score for himself and its disapointing seeing negativity.

Love this bike man! This will be an Instant Favorite once its in the Museum. I saw its listing, but couldn't do it. Many more folks deserve this way more than I could ever imagine.

the criers need to go PM themselves. seriously. argue elsewhere, this is not the thread you are looking for.

Green 85 GT World Tour - Complete, but could still use some white brakes and levers
Green 86 GT Interceptor - needs sticker set and a decision on what wheels to use.
White 85 Hutch Wind Styler - just needs front brake cable installed.
