1990 Hutchins Judge II

Best fathersday gift EVER!

In the 1980’s I lived on my bike. I raced a few times over at Cowtown but never finished higher than 7th. I usually wreaked out. I had  Huffys, a 83 diamond back viper, an 81 Mongoose, a 79 Redline, but my favorite bike of all time was my Hutch Pro-Star. My mom’s friends son was a factory rider…wish I could remember his name…anyway, he built me a custom Pro Star out of a FF set and left over parts he had laying around his garage for $250! I know that it wasn’t a factory Pro-Star, but it was the coolest thing on the block and it was an oh so sweet black and chrome beauty! It was stolen from me in the summer of 85. I’m not sure if I have ever gotten over it. I have a son of my own now and I am getting soft in the middle so for this past father’s day I was going to get me a bike so I could go riding with him. I was going to get me a Wal-mart special, but decided to check on e-bay first. There I found that BMX was still alive and kicken and I seen all the old bikes I used to ride. What fun! What memories! I ran across a Hutchins frame. I didn’t know the Hutch/ Hutchins story as I had gotten out of BMX before the name change. Girls and cars. The last I had heard was that Hutch went south and started selling cheap bikes at Western Auto. Anyway I did my research and decided that’s what I wanted. I went ahead and bought the Judge frame and I bet that it was over priced. Oh well, I think it was worth every cent! Especially since there are 16K+ bikes here on the museum and only one other Judge like mine. I think that’s kinda special in itself. I was so excited when I got it that I couldn’t stop buying parts for it until it was done. I have a few parts that need to be replaced and a few that need some TLC but it’s a sweet ride as it sits now. It will be a show bike soon but it is now and will always be a rider. I think it’s just about the coolest BMX out there. I hope everyone who sees it can appreciate it as much as I do.
Most of the parts on this build are NOS. Others are just plain OS. Only one “NEW School” Part; King Headset
Parts to be replaced –
Pedals; swap with some Blue Candy and Chrome Bear traps
Brakes; Need a blue MX1000 set up
Parts to be refurbished –
Going to re-anodize the crank arms and spider
Getting some Red anno axel nuts
I don’t think I can improve much more than that.
Ride hard and have fun!

Re: 1990 Hutchins Judge II

Yea, they are the low end Shimanos. Wish I had the coin for the SX, I like these though. I have thought about getting some NOS with 1/2" spindals and swaping out the bodies. 1/2" being a lil less expensive. Ware them for riding around the hood and, since this latest Hutch debacle, maybe get some crupi mini rounds for the track vs the bear trap...same grip anyway.

Re: 1990 Hutchins Judge II

Sorry all, my pedal description was off, I guess it was wishful thinking. I currently have the low end Shimono MX not the $500 DX or SX or whatever sad

Re: 1990 Hutchins Judge II

Yea, I think there is a baseball...Im outa town right now or I'd go check...my memory isnt that good...to much stuff up there and it gets mixed up or falls in a POT hole....The Judge is all USA made...with leftover Jap dropouts...baddest bike around IMHO. big_smilebig_smilebig_smile

Re: 1990 Hutchins Judge II

nice bike! I got a chrome Hutchins frame just like that for christmas when I was 12. It was in 91 or 92. I remember the frame was on sale for $75 at my local bike shop because the chrome had discoloration around the bottom bracket. I knew my folks wouldn't be able to afford a normal frame so I begged them for that one. I wish I would've held onto it. I took second place in a MN state championship race with that bike after 2 kids in front of me crashed, lol. It doesn't look like you have the original fork so I gotta ask, does the chrome have discoloration around the BB? I'd love to buy it from you if it does. smile
